Survived the storm here in Kure Beach with minor roof and siding damage. Parts of Carolina Beach were under 5-6ft last night! Our dunes washed out, but the beach actually widened which is pretty cool. There's all sorts of cool shells and sea critter on the beach too!

yeah going out on the beach just after the storm is awesome. Cool shells, starfish, crabs, baby octopus...all kinds of stuff. Sad some of the creatures die. But still neat to see.

Seen the dunes at K, L, or M avenues? My grad project is in the dunes there... curious if the dunes, and thus my system, got wiped out.

Early reports for my parents place on the Neuse.... 4-4.5' of water in the house, which is probably a 12-15' surge height. Not sounding good. One of our sheds was pushed about 100' from its foundation and now is sitting in the middle of our road the other one may have been knocked off its elevated foundation... hopefully it didn't take out a wall on the house. pictures to come sometime. parents are hoping to get back there tomorrow.

I just walked south down towards sandstone and the riggings. Most of the dunes got wiped out pretty good. The root mats of the sea oats are totally exposed and many people had their beach walkways washed out. I will go take some pics of the dunes by K,L and M avenues so you know what to expect.

^ok. if you see a bunch of black or orange chambers (like half a 7' diameter pipe), then my system got wiped out. I've got the feeling these were far enough back to be ok. though some monitoring wells throughout the dunes may have been exposed/damaged (2" PVC pips going into the dunes).

I should clarify - I'm not a grad student anymore, but this was my project in grad school, which I just finished last year. I'm still working on publications for it though.

^overtime they will; however, depending on the extent of loss, changes in bathymetry (underwater topography), topography, storms, currents, etc., it could take a while and get worse before better.

I'd imagine there'll be some projects to restore them.

we usually park our cars right there on canal drive at the boardwalk to carolina beach. are the dunes washed out there as well? I'm thinking about this area in the picture at this link:

^Not sure, but the cops had the boardwalk closed last night by like 8:00 due to extensive flooding. I would imagine the dunes were affected though I'm not sure the extent.

Parts of collington & Bay Dr in KDH are under water from soundside flooding. Word is several Dominion Power crews are stranded in Wanchese & are awaiting Nat'l guard assistance to get back to the mainland

sevenythree - my cousin lives on the soundside of EI.... their dock was hit bad but up near their house was fine (there's a little path from their house down to the water.. they sit on somewhat of a hill)


she said it was eerie how the house areas were not getting as much wind as they expected, but the second you walked down to the dock it was crazy. :\

Thanks samwise. We found out our boat (a 36ish' jarrett bay) fell off the lift and its hull was impaled by the skids. Water may have made it in downstairs but not sure yet. Dad is leaving in a bit to check it out.

We're still alive here in Greenville.

We had a miserable day yesterday. The power was out for more than 14 hours, but we couldn't open windows because of the wind and rain. We've regained power and DSL services, but we're still without phones. We luckily didn't sustain a lot of damage, just a lot of downed limbs -- one resting on the power line feeding the house. An outbuilding turned over on its side, but it looks like it'll be fine once we turn it back over.

I was able to get into town, but there are areas with trees down over the road and a few areas of flooding. A lot of people (my mom is one of them) are still without power and consequently without water. There appears to be a lot of damage to power lines and houses due to downed trees and limbs.

^In Greenville here (but on the west side). I didn't think it was that bad because I live in an apartment and don't have to worry about trees. Power went out for an hour and other than that, just flickered a lot.

But when I went for a drive today, it was crazy. There are a shitton of trees down, poles down, several stoplights aren't working, and lots of areas partially flooded.

Oh, and a lawn chair fell over behind my apartment. 8/27 NEVER FORGET

Yeah, I'm about 10 miles south of Greenville. I tried to go to Ayden to grocery shop this morning, but couldn't because of flooding on HW102. I went to Bell's Fork and it was bumpin'. Lots of people getting out and restocking. All down County Home Rd. into town I saw flooding and damage.

I'm hearing confirmed reports of a new inlet that opened about 200yds wide on Hatteras Island. The ferry service is going to begin operations to pick up stranded residents. Also, an 800yd stretch of Hwy 12 washed out near Rodanthe.

The new Hatteras inlet is just north of the maintenance building on hwy12, bout 5 miles north if rodanthe. There's another one too but I'm not sure where exactly it is yet.

I'm out in the country near Grifton. We lost power around 9 a.m. yesterday and still haven't gotten it back.

I'm at my sister-in-law's apartment in Greenville right now, and order has pretty much been restored out here. Kinston probably won't get 100 percent of its power back till at least Friday, according to the mayor's Facebook page.

Grifton was basically cut off from the outside world till midday today by standing water and downed trees. Four-wheel drive got me to a few places that other vehicles may not have been able to go, but I still had to look for several different routes to Greenville before we finally got here. We stopped in Winterville for food this morning, and the line was wrapped out the door at both McDonald's and Burger King.

the house where "Nights in Rodanthe" was filmed used to be located where that new inlet is cutting through at Rodanthe.

In shitty news, my uncle's house that is located directly behind there on the sound side burned to the ground. No one's been able to get in touch with him or his wife either.

From all the driving I did today (driving to the folks to help with cleanup and back a different way)

Worst Areas: New Bern, Vanceboro, Highways 17 and 43 from New Bern to Greenville
Moderate Damage: Rocky Mount, Goldsboro, Kinston, Greenville, 70 from Goldsboro to before New Bern, I-95, Bridgeton
Little Damage: 795 (odd but hardly anything along there)

Vanceboro has this stream right to the side when you enter it coming from New Bern side and the water is usually far beneath this bridge for a road that cuts off normally. The water is up to where it's right underneath the bridge as of this evening.

^^^^ Was their name Meekins? Their story was on WRAL tonight. They interviewed a lady whose house burned and they swam to another house in a different development. They showed a pic of the house...was pretty sweet...had a lighthouse looking section on it.
