^^ don't even have to use a modifier in windows 8

[Windows key]
paint
[Enter]

And have you tried server core yet? I've been messing with it for a few days and its much much better than win2k8. The powershell cmdlets replace all the obscure configuration shit with really straightforward commands. The only thing I've really had issues with from the command line is doing advanced filesystem permissions, but I'm sure someone will release a simplified powershell cmdlet pack for it soon

So far I've not found too many incompatible programs. So far I've only had to run Trillian and Newsleecher in Windows 7 compatibility mode.

Although if anyone can think of a way to pin a link to the Start Screen to my taskbar I'd appreciate it. The "corner" thing isn't working for me (dual monitors) so I'm using the windows key 100% of the time.

I haven't tried server core. I'm using 2k12 in AWS, which isn't licensed yet. 2008 was a much better ui than the normal 2012 ui for configuration and service management - much less shit to weed through. that corner thing is super annoying in RDP as well. i'm trying to create a DC, setup for virtual dc promotion from backup media as well as exchange to test DAG functionality.

because the box is in AWS and I don't have a vpc I can terminate to my laptop. I also don't have a remote machine that would have a 2012 mmc

so one thing that's bothered me about win8 that i never bothered to investigate until now is that my 1920x1080 laptop screen looked really big, turns out this default setting changed in win8 from 100% to 125%. set it back to 100% and it looks much more gooder now

I was thinking about giving Windows 8 a trail spin and had a random question. Did they finally provide a way to change the login screen image, metro background, etc., etc. without resorting to manually manipulating the registry and without odd limitations (resolution, file size, etc.)

And I'll toss in one more etc. before I click Post Reply!

Edit: I found the answer, so never mind.

No, not out of the box, but there are already utility apps out there that let you do this.

Why would they not just run desktop on all three monitors if they don't like metro?

Maybe in the future. As it stands right now, I'm not in a position to even think about messing around with different IDEs.

Not that I actually have time to upgrade an OS either, but I thought I'd be forward thinking on this.

So it seems like the upgrade to windows 8 pro is pretty cheap, but I'm building a new computer so I'm going to have to get the OEM version.

For someone who mostly uses his computer for games, media, and internet; is there any reason to spend the extra $40 for pro? I know pro comes with windows media center and lots of people enjoy that, but I never used that on previous Windows anyway.

^^^ Why? If you have an existing Win7 license, why not just got for the upgrade?

Windows Media Center doesn't come with Pro. Until January, if you have Win8 Pro, you can get a free key for Media Center.

The differences between Pro and standard are: Bitlocker, Domain support and Remote Desktop support.

Do you have a copy of winxp laying around? If so, install that then do the win8 upgrade.

^^Sorry that I have no idea about. But I'd bet the copy you use to qualify for an "upgrade" doesn't have to be attached to the same piece of hardware. Not sure how the legalese works on that, but it should work physically, since the upgrade check is based on the disk media and not an activated license AFAIK.

Clover Trail devices are all being delayed, the Lenovo Tablet 2 that was supposed to be available today is now expected in December 16. Similar delays with the other tablets.

I just want a damn tablet with a digitizer, I don't care what the processor is or what the cost is but I need it this year!

^if you use WMC or a networked cable card tuner, you might want to wait. Neither ceton or silicondust have released Win8 supported drivers or software, and network bridging doesn't work right now.

If you're just using your htpc as a media server with Xbmc, then it's definitely worth the upgrade. win8 adds a lot of the goodies that windows home server had

I'd be interested to know some of those improvements. I primarily use mine as a media server with XBMC and various other services...SSH, media transcoder, etc. Nothing I use is really a direct feature of Windows 7.

If you are in a market a touchscreen ultra book, make sure you can fold it into a tablet and lay it down flat. I see that the Aspire can hinge 180%, which means it's halfway there, but then you are stuck with this keyboard uncomfortably all up in your way. Get a device that can properly fold into a tablet configuration (screen hinges 360 degrees, or pops up, rotates 180, and flips back down). This is based on personal experience with desktop, notebook, and tablet form-factor touch screen devices. Trust me, the design of the hinge will matter a whole lot more than the difference between i5 and i7.

Lenovo Yoga 13 does that

I played with it at Best Buy, its too big to use as a tablet in the same way as I use my iPad, but its not too big to use as a tablet if you're sitting in front of your TV or on a plane or something. The reviews mentioned problems with the trackpad and touchscreen for the Yoga, but I didn't experience any of these issues in the 45 min I was playing with it.

i purchased 2 of them myself

i still can't get over the lack of a traditional windows start menu...i can't help but find it cumbersome to use damn metro on my desktop and laptop (ie. non-touchscreen) and allowing for the traditional desktop by no start menu is just...dumb

that said, start8 is excellent...it has the added benefit of bypassing metro upon startup and so i don't have to deal with those ridiculous tiles

and, past that one major complaint, i have to say that i LIKE windows 8...it's noticeably faster to boot and snappier during use...i like the modest UI changes (in "regular" mode), as well

i was a bit annoyed that i couldn't figure out how to print a PDF that opened in one of the metro apps...yes, CTRL+P worked just find, but there was no print icon (despite having a "save as" and a few others, so there was no excuse for printing to not be on that same menu as well)

and i'm quite annoyed that it's not easy (or intuitive) to change the default opener for "http:" links in emails and such...because despite waterfox being set as my default browser, those only open in IE10 (which i have no interest in using)...i found a page that addressed the strange behavior (the inability to deselect IE10 as the default http handler), so i'll link to that later (so as better describe what i'm talking about)

overall, though, it was worth $15 (well, $20 once you factor in the $5 for start8, which is a must if you want to use win8 on anything that isn't a touchscreen)

This drove me batshit insane for hours.

To print from a Metro app, you have to bring up the charms bar, select DEVICES, choose a printer and then print to it. My fucking head exploded when I figured it out. Has to be one of the most backwards mental workflows I have ever had to endure.

Ouch. It's always bad news when you're confusing 99% of your customers for no reason. There's still time to save it with a major update and rollback though.

That's because the majority of Windows 8 tablets aren't even available yet, and PC Sales shrank because no one wants to buy old hardware and new Windows 8 hardware has just been trickling out.

I never had any problems with screen responsiveness either.
