my folks still have the defy...the $100 JB rebates runs through june (?) and the moto G would qualify, right?
so that would be $49 for a no-contract upgrade from the defy to the moto G, yes? 4/23/2014 10:42:52 AM |

Yeah being strait with you, the Defy definitely doesn't do the service justice. I had it for a while and while it was good, it was just a temporary thing until the X came out. 5/2/2014 4:35:13 PM |

I assume he'll figure that out soon enough. Defy is a good cheap way to test the service at least, plus he can always flip the phone in a month or so when it inevitably becomes too slow or runs out of memory, and pick up a Moto G/X.
I'm guessing in the next few months we'll start hearing about Moto E possibly becoming the good phone in the good/better/best system they're apparently setting up.

Moto E? I'll have to look it up. If it hasnt been announced yet by Moto, (assuming its announced on the 13th) then that means about 4-5 months before Republic will probably announce it. 5/9/2014 8:19:11 AM |

yeah the phone is nothing special. That said, I still have my S3 which I use for my games/music. I am usually around a wifi signal anyway, so I am not missing out on any apps or other normal phone activities. I have resigned to just use my Defy as a simple phone/texting device and it is plenty adequate for that. If I was on a long road trip or something, I would want something better.
I may actually stick with it for now as the service is great and to be honest, knowing that my total investment is going to be so dirt cheap low ... that is quite satisfying. 5/9/2014 12:00:51 PM |

I love the X, I ordered the day it was announced.
If I was ordering now, i'm not sure if i'd order the X or the G, since i'm only on the 3G plan. I guess its good to have the option to use the 4G, although I was extremely unimpressed the last time I tried using it in Greensboro. But for the $22.50 a month i'm paying now (compared to $85/month with verizon), i'm not complaining at all. After 5 month the phone payed for itself. 5/9/2014 4:47:39 PM |

Anybody got a workaround to block a 5 digit number? Someone signed my number up for K97.5's text club apparently, so I get like 2-3 texts a day keeping me up with all the hottest hip hop news. I do not wish to receive these, and I can't reply stop to them because Republic doesn't support 5 digit numbers. 5/21/2014 10:05:41 AM |
dbhawley All American 3339 Posts user info edit post |
Here's some info from the Republic Community. Since you cant reveive those texts from 5 digit numbers on your number, whoever must have had your underlying "Sprint number" before you must have signed up.
https://community.republicwireless.com/people/carlh/blog/2013/11/20/moto-x-how-to-find-out-your-phones-sprint-number
I was getting tons of calls and texts from bill collectors for a Sheila. Since I've had my cell phone number for years, I knew it was coming in through the Sprint number. I ended up opening a help ticket for Republic to change my underlying sprint number, which they happily did and they calls/texts have stopped.
On a side note, if you did want to start receiving text notifications from a 5 digit service, you can give them your 'sprint number' once you figure that out. You wont be able to respond, but you can receive the messages. I believe if you downgrade to the $5, when you come back to the cell plan, you get a new sprint number, but im not sure.
On a side note, I got invited to the Republic Headquarters to share "My Republic Story" on Monday. It was cool to get a tour of the Republic Office and meet the CEO, and they sent me home with a goodie bag (including a Otterbox for my X). Great guys out there.

It took them all of about 2.5 hours to complete my request to change the Sprint number. Haven't received any 5 digit number texts since. Chalk it up as a solid minor victory. 5/22/2014 9:45:09 AM |

and THEN send in your defy for the trade up program to get another $100 back
customized 32GB moto X for $200 with no contract? not bad.

Ugh, this would be the time to spring for the Moto X I guess...
Honestly still haven't done my homework comparing Republic Wireless plan with Moto X to other plans in the area (T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint) at low cost with a more customizable choice of phone.

That's true too, I'm not sure it's do or die for me. I have an 8GB Razr (it's awful) and the space is really unimportant for me since I just use Spotify all the time for music, and would never load up any other large format media on my phone... 6/5/2014 7:11:50 PM |

Has anybody gotten a lot more spam calls since switching up to a newer phone? We purchased a Moto G on a new line for my wife. That got some spam calls and texts, but not a huge surprise with a new number. About a month ago I upgraded our line with a Defy XT to a Moto X. All of a sudden I am getting 5-10 spam calls a day, many of them only calling in Spanish and not even having an English option so I can cancel/unsubscribe. It has gotten so bad that I downloaded Mr. Number to block spam calls. But I have had this same number for 8-10 years now. Any reason why it would suddenly get slammed with spam calls after upgrading to the Moto X? 8/7/2014 2:38:08 PM |

anyone updated their rooted moto x running 4.2.2 JB to 4.4.2 KK...AND kept root using towelpieroot?
i just realized today that my wife's phone is still on JB, but then i remember i rooted it, so it won't take the OTA, even when i force it to check
so now i'm trying to catch up...it sounds like towelpieroot will keep root from the JB to KK update, but i need to get the update itself somehow...i'm not even sure why it won't check for the OTA, since i don't have titanium installed (or anything else that would freeze the OTA app) and i can't remember doing anything different
