That's the challenger's advantage. He can basically say anything he wants, because he doesn't have anything tangible to account for.

Obama can't really just make stuff up, because he's hard 4 years on the record.

Obama should be the one doing more cheerleading (reversed jobs slide, reversed stock market, stabilized housing market, kill bin laden) whilst Romney should be on the ropes about the things he said, but it was almost reversed in this debate.

Romney just kept saying "private enterprise" and obama kept trying to explain his policies. Completely backwards...

I really want to know what debate Supplanter was watching.

James Carville and Bill Maher are praising Mitt Romney's performance.

LOOK AT THOSE NAMES.

Maher is pretty good about giving credit where it's due, except when it comes to religion.

Can't speak to Carvile.

Boy it is awfully quiet in here when not only did Romney win the debate, but won it on a 70-30 margin that even msnbc couldn't spin it and looked mad admitting it!

Give the victory a week to soak in.

Just in time for Joe Biden to run a fumble in the wrong direction.

You better pray that Obama can handle Romney in foreign policy. Mittens shouldn't stand a chance there right?

Im sure Obama will bounce back though.

if obama performs as poorly in the next debate as he did in this one, i will admit that his chances at winning the election were/are hurt

but to say anyone "won" a debate in which NOTHING of substance was debated, in which the ONLY thing that happened is each called the other a liar, is just plain silly

yes, appearance matters...but only marginally, especially 4 weeks out from the election...the populace bores easily and forgets quickly

no one's mind was changed after last night's debate...the left and right are still sitting firmly in their respective camps (the right celebrating a "win" and the left shrugging off the "loss") and the undecided heard nothing compelling from either side...so how can anyone say that one candidate won or lost?

the only losers are the folks who expected a debate of substance and got a slap fight

They were all terrible in their own way. Romney came off looking like an asshole. Obama came off looking like a pussy. And Lehrer came off looking like that teacher you had in high school with zero classroom management skills.

Wrong. I don't know exactly what you people think a debate is, but appearance is everything. Just look at JFK/Nixon (ive said this once before already, sorry).

Did any of you people debate in school? In class? In some kind of club? I don't mean with your friends at Panera... A real debate can be won easily with flubbed facts and figures.

Not ridiculous or obviously wrong however, because then your opponent is given ammunition if they are a good debater. Now, Romney gave Obama that opportunity many times last night and Obama didn't capitalize on it.

I thought it was generally accepted that Obama was a good debater, so surely he picked up on that? Or maybe he didn't because he was obviously disinterested. Regardless, he can't afford it again.

Quote :
"no one's mind was changed after last night's debate..."

Wrong again. I'm sure Obama looked fairly incompetent to a number of independents, his own supporters are disgusted with him, and even the most hardcore liberal is tending to attack the moderator rather than defend their President. Anyone who was voting for "anybody but Obama" is suddenly enthusiastic that maybe their default choice isn't such an idiot/nerd/robot anymore. Could Romney actually be beginning to get exciting? That's quite a revelation in and of itself.

Again, debates I think are less about substance than you realize, although obviously you can't go on stage talking about a bajillion dollars and your spaceship plans to the star Vega, etc. I couldn't help but think last night if Ron Paul had been a part of this that he would have been attached to the ceiling screaming like an ape.

But anyway, ill concede that maybe one debate doesn't do a whole lot except take a little momentum from one and give it to another. I don't think the VP debate is particularly important in general, but I also think if Obama round 2 and 3 goes similarly awry then he's in big trouble. Do we know who the next moderator is?

No, Romney knows what a debate is, especially in 2012. Obama wasn't exactly a pussy, he just didn't want to be there, period. Maybe he wasn't feeling well? Who knows.

Lehrer is only being attacked in hindsight because certain folks think it was his responsibility specifically to rescue a floundering Obama. No, no, no...

Obama and Romney are obviously both mature and important enough not to descend into a brawl, everyone in the room knew that. By moderating less and being unobtrusive the debate was actually much more candid and revealing because they could engage each other. Obama abused the moderator a little bit too, he just didn't take advantage of the relaxed style nearly as effectively as Romney did. Again, not because he is incapable of it, but he just didn't feel like it this time for some reason.

Romney is not McCain; I think Obama made a gross error and also I think maybe his team is playing it safe because they think they have a comfortable lead. Maybe so, but do you really think taking a knee and running out the clock is the best plan?

"Wrong."

i like how you conveniently forgot the part where i noted it's 4 weeks before the election...you're deluding yourself if you think that this debate will be remembered after the next one or the one after that...or the day of the election

it was not earth-shattering or ground-breaking in any way (except that romney appeared to have some balls, but whipped them out in asshole form...i was, admittedly, surprised by that)

Quote :
"Just look at JFK/Nixon (ive said this once before already, sorry)."

you keep saying it because it's all you have...and it's an extreme case...and you're comparing it to a non-extreme case

Quote :
"Wrong again."

prove it...please, after the election, demonstrate how this one debate, during which nothing of substance was actually debated, single-handedly tipped the scales one way or another

I didn't watch, but the overall perception online is that Romney came off as a competent leader and decisive person, especially when compared to Obama's performance both last night and over his 4 years of failure to bring partisanship to the House and Senate. An independent voter likely has more faith in Romney to make deals and get progress out of a divided house than Obama.

I tried to watch most of it, but was bored outta my mind. I must say, however, that Romney did much better than I expected. I don't know how you can really declare a "winner" when it's two guys using lies and half-truths to argue, and neither looked like a total idiot. But Romney was a winner in that he did a lot better than expected, and he did seem more engaged than Obama.... or was that just Obama's strategy?

Again, Obama is not so far ahead that he can just start taking knees and run out the clock.

They cannot possibly be thinking that this far out.

I think he was just off-balance for some reason yesterday. I hope for his sake it was something temporary.

I'm obviously a Romney supporter, but I want him to face Obama at his best. Not this ghost that we saw last night.

I don't know how anyone could consider that debate revealing for either side. They skimmed the surface of a bunch of talking points. If anyone was hoping to get some details out of the candidates, it certainly wasn't happening last night. Lehrer played a big role in that by asking vague opening questions and then getting steamrolled by the candidates whenever he tried to moderate.

One side being on fire and the other side looking like they'd rather commit suicide is fairly revealing to most people.
