he worded it very clumsily but he wasn't referring to getting shot and killed as the christmas present, but rather going to heaven.

you're either really dense, really dumb, or are just in the mood to get mad at somebody if you don't understand that.

Not as dense or dumb as he was to post it.

No matter how you spin it, using celebratory all caps in any kind of reference to this massacre is fucking nonsense that deserves whatever berating it received.

The guy lacks respect and tact, and that's the bottom line.

^ALL CAPS POLICE

in doubt? ask bweez, he's the end-all-be-all of when using caps is appropriate.

if only he had used smaller case letters, this whole thing woulda blown over.

I think the emphasis was more on "celebratory" than "all caps".

he's celebrating his belief that they all went to heaven.

what's wrong with that?

for the record, that post was quite dumb. but it's just people making a mountain out of a molehill as if he's happy to see children get shot.

since no one reads the last post:

Quote :
"Tragedies were much more bearable before Facebook and twitter."

agreed. really before the age of instant information sharing at all

our current technology culture allows dissemination of so much information so quickly that journalists need to be that much more careful before reporting something as fact

I really wish the major news networks would change how they report stuff like this... but unfortunately the "ME FIRST" frame of mind is taking over proper journalism.

and on top of THAT, there are some psychologists suggesting that the way in which the media covers mass murderers may lead people "on the edge" to commit something horrible in order to gain national/international attention...

"BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER" sorta implies that he believes they are better off than if they'd lived. which i guess he does.

oh well.

I'm out.

This amazes me. Children of strangers were massacred, then a stranger makes a consoling statement online. And that person's form of sympathy isn't good enough for you. How's the view way up there?

There should be no criteria, no test, for how someone expresses sympathy. The best you can say is that you wouldn't word it that way yourself. You can do just that, word it yourself. In bashing religion, the importance of some holy-seeming 'rightness' I see from people is astounding.

sounds to me like a person struggling to find a way to cope with and process a horrible tragedy. probably should've kept it to himself in hindsight, but if it helps him deal with it, good for him.

Consoling? Sympathy?

I'm sure the parents would love to hear "BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER! MERRY CHRISTMAS! They're with Jesus now." from this guy while they're burying their kids.

I just went through the little scrapebook of the kids and adults murdered...

pulled on my heartstrings and I think theres some dust in my eye.

to be fair I also had some slow country music in the background so that might have caused my eye to catch the dust a little easier.

None of us currently involved in the discussion is consoling the parents of the victims. We don't know the victims. What we're doing right now is participating in an internet firestorm of emotions and bickering stemming from the event.

Just about all religions celebrate death. Religions were created in no small part as a means of people dealing with death. Is Cinco de Mayo abhorrent to you? There is also usually a safe rational space presented by these religions that celebrate death, where they don't want anybody to die. If there was any uncertainty, then I think classifying suicide as a sin clears it up pretty well for Christianity as a whole. The only ones that have a true unqualified celebration of death are the Kool Aid cults.

I don't share the guy's beliefs on heaven, but I understood perfectly what he meant, and apparently so did you. Although I doubt his status update will reach the victims, I don't doubt they're getting plenty of "they're in a better place" arguments. I also don't think they'll really be harmed by those. The presence of family and friends is a million times more important that the way they phrase condolences.

This is actually offensive:

"“Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment,” Shirley Phelps-Roper tweeted on Dec. 15.

“They need to come back to Oklahoma,” Bryan Weathers, from Moore, said. “We know how to take care of them here.”"

i'm saying it's getting worse and worse as access to information becomes easier and faster

you're right, 25 years ago it was still possible for the major news networks to wrongly identify a murderer and plaster his face all over their reports just because they wanted to be the first ones to name the shooter. But the process was a little different back then... they couldn't just search facebook for a guy in CT named Ryan Lanza and run the story 5 minutes later

I haven't read much or watched any of this coverage. What is the point of these "Photo Galleries" of the masacre in web news? Talk about media sensationalism. We get it. We understand the human connection in this tragedy. You don't need a goddamn photo gallery of children crying or armed officials. We get it. It's chaos. It's sad. Now stop it.

That is so sad and so scary at the same time. The worst part is everyone out there who will look for a reason and try and blame the parents, the family, a gun, a past teacher, etc, etc... When the reality is mental illness has no reason and we have no idea how to deal with it as a society.

Thanks for posting the link.

this whole thing is an extremely complex situation and I'm afraid a vast majority of the country are unable to handle it and have a legit conversation about everything without digging into whatever side they care the most about

the history of dealing with mental illness certainly calls for a new approach.

from exorcisms to institutionalism to lobotomy to electroconvulsive therapy to psychiatric meds... we, as a species, still haven't been able to fully stop it.

though perhaps lobotomizing should be considered in extreme cases. there's an argument to be made there.

Quote :
"Hong Kong (CNN) -- On Friday morning, a man walked through the entrance of an elementary school and, without warning, began ruthlessly cutting down children at the school. Before he was subdued, nearly two dozen were hit.
While it sounds like the horrific massacre in Connecticut, this attack took place about 8,000 miles away in central China. And while several of the victims were reported in critical condition, none of the 22 children were killed. The 36-year-old suspect in China -- which has strict gun control laws -- attacked the children with a knife, according to local reports."
