...is bankrupt

I find it hilariously ironic that the city that is home to the team with the 5th highest payroll in the league is bankrupt

I find it hilarious that something like that is used in the context of sports to try to get to the players/fans of a team.

Most people could care less that Detroit is bankrupt because it was a long time coming

They have that payroll because we have the best owner in all of baseball. He wants to win a WS for the city before he dies (which unfortunately looks to be sooner than later)

Season ends right now, who is your NL MVP?

Goldschmidt, Molina, Votto, McCutchen, Craig, Freeman, Kershaw, CarGo, Tulo....lot of good candidates.

Goldschmidt, Tulo, and CarGon are all disqualified since their team is not going to make the playoffs and their stats are not that much greater than the playoff bound MVP contenders. Kershaw isn't winning it since he's a pitcher and he'd need to be having a historic season in order to take the MVP. That mainly leaves Freeman and the NL Central guys.

Craig is a monster RBI guy, but his lack of HRs hurts him. Votto walks too much hurting his overall metrics that MVP voters like (i.e. HRs, RBIs). McCutchen probably deserves it for leading an otherwise meh Pirates team to the best record in MLB while playing in a stout division. Freeman won't win because he is not the best at any of the key stats and doesn't have the sidebar stats like steals to help his case.

Molina since he is a catcher and defensively superior to his peers and he's having a strong offensive year probably is the front runner (especially if he wins the batting title). It'll be close between him and McCutchen unless someone else comes on strong or Molina/McCutchen get hurt/fade.

The NL playoff picture is boring as shit. Hope the Dodgers start losing to atleast create some drama.

^^Long stints on the DL can pretty much kill an MVP bid. With Molina's injury I think it's probably McCutchen's to lose.

I'm a little surprised that more people aren't making the Puig/Myers to Trout/Harper comparisons. It's not often that you have a pair of rookies obliterating the league in back to back years.

A lot of people were very dismissive of Puig during the whole all-star or not all-star debate last month, but he's maintained his performance now through 63 games. His offensive numbers are pretty incredible. Myers looks like he's legit as well, he may not be as flashy as Puig, but he's also batting north of .300 and showing legit power. As a KC fan I really wish he wasn't quite this good quite this fast, but minus this little mini-slump recently he's been pretty beastly as well.

They're both having fine seasons, but, to be fair, 22 year olds posting those number are historically much more commonplace than 19 and 20 year olds doing the same thing.

That's very true, actually. Mostly though I blame Miggy, Chris Davis, and Biogenesis.

Hmm, just checked and Trout just turned 22 and is 8 months younger than Puig and Myers.

Mariano Rivera has had a great career, but fucking let it go already. When did announcing your retirement mean that we'd have to endure a year of standing ovations and stupid gifts? Christ, I don't even want to think about what it's going to be like when Jeter retires.

I get the ejection, guy threw a little shit fit and threw his helmet, but god damnit baseball, will you just fucking admit that replay could improve the game.

I'm all for the players making all the money they can, but the really long deals to 30+ year old players haven't gone so well recently. I gotta think nobody will do that. It'd probably be better to look for 4-5 and when he's still good look for another 4-5. If you go for like 7 you might already be slipping and not get that next one

Lol at some of our preseason playoff team picks. Too many of us bought the Blue Jays and Angels hype. I got 6/10. Giants, Blue Jays, and Angels were awful.

My picks were fucking awful. 3/5 in the NL, 2/5 in the AL if the Rangers make it I need to stop doubting the As and Rays. Also LOL at the Giants this year.

Also the idea that Rivera might play CF is great. I want to see that.

And glad to hear Selig is finally retiring. Need some young blood in the upper management of MLB.

Glad that awful call last night when Martin trapped it in center did not cost the Rays. Terrible call.

Be interesting to see which Liriano shows up tonight for Pitt in the first playoff game for them in 21 years.

Don Mattingly's decision to go with Kershaw on short rest while leading the series should be more than enough of a reason to fire him before the game

Yeah, it's pretty inexplicable. Pitch your ace on short rest, which he's never done in his career, when you're up 2-1. I could see it if you were down 2-1 and staving off elimination, but you're up and the braves are throwing Freddy Garcia.

I don't get it.

Well I am almost ready to stop watching these playoffs now that the Pirates are out and we are left with the Cards and LA. Rooting for the As because if it's Tigers-Red Sox, then I officially don't give a shit who wins at that point. Definitely do not want the Cards or LA to win.

my dad is a lifelong Cardinals fan. as a Braves fan I have a hard time with that, but I enjoy watching the red birds with him. I'm also hoping the A's stay in it to keep my interest.

I really just don't want an A's/Dodgers WS because i'll never be able to stay up past the 4th inning

That Mattingly-Colletti press conference yesterday was lolerific. Talk about awkward. I can't blame the Dodgers though as Mattingly was routinely out-managed this season and in the post season. He needs to grow his mustache back and maybe that'll help him make better in-game decisions.

If the Dodgers want to fire him, just go ahead and do it and get it over with.

terrible call but i'm guessing he had his eye more on the feet of Kozma than the glove. But the crew got it right.

Terrible game by the Cards. they looked shaky from the start.

I am glad they got the call right, but last night was one fucking weird time to start doing something like that in MLB. Honestly that should be what they do on any obvious blown call though. Wish they would have done that last year when the Braves got shitted on in their 1 game playoff against the Cards with the blown infield fly call.

There are key differences between this instance and soooooo many other calls that a lot of people are forgetting. This wasn't a judgement call on a close play at a bag, or a line call, etc... This was a call that was an obvious blown call. Infield fly call? Judgement call. Fan interference? Judgement call. This? Missed call
