Shrapnel is a necessary component for any explosive intended to kill people.

Without shrapnel, an explosion is much less potent (but still very dangerous and deadly).

Ball bearings aren't surprising really. Depending on where the bearings came from, that could shed light on who did this.

Because its the easy thing to do I would guess. At this point I am assuming it was a crazy white guy. If it were a terrorist group you would have to think they would have put out a statement taking credit by now. I guess it could be the whole "lone wolf" theory and its some muslim acting on his own, but I am still leaning crazy white guy.

Just doesn't feel like a foreign attack to me. Too small, no building or infrastructure targeted, intelligence officials are saying there was no specific "chatter" leading up to it, and the bombs themselves were low tech/weak for their size. Of course it's possible, but man, from crashing planes into the WTC to blowing up bombs in trash cans? That's a long fall. My money is on a psycho loner that just wanted to murder a bunch of people and then enjoy the news coverage of his work for a few days.
