Quote : | "Consider too that, according to The Washington Post, “the cost of acquiring video content was ‘the single biggest impediment'” to Fiber’s wider rollout, Fiber executive Milo Medin told an audience in 2014. Google was reportedly paying “twice as much” compared with more established service providers for video rights, in part because it lacked comparable vertical integrations and legacy deals." |
So they were getting screwed on content deals. If they put everything through YouTube TV they have more scale to throw around.2/10/2020 10:29:59 AM |

I just went back to ATT 1000 and signed up for YouTube TV. Tired of having a DVR that only works in one room. I like the option of using the YouTube TV at multiple locations. (We have 4 Spectrum acts between our vacation homes, home, and office). The Roku app on Spectrum used to be a good deal but nothing has been done to enhance it and there is no DVR or pause. There are also constant outages.
Hoping the YoutTube Tv satisfies the vacation renters...it has local networks and espn, just no A&E (which sucks) but whatever. Will save over $100 a month and be able to access my DVR from anywhere including phone iPad. At the properties that only have spectrum it will be 45-50/mo ad long as I stay on a promo. 2/15/2020 9:44:49 AM |

We tried YouTube TV at the rental but got complaints from people who couldn't figure it out after we bought a TV that had it built in. Most renters were fine, but the people who couldn't figure it out also couldn't figure it out with help on phone so we had to offer some discounts. If I did it again I'd try to find a TV or device that had a big youtube tv button on the remote. 2/16/2020 10:21:16 AM |

So I just canceled our Google Fiber TV service after almost 3 years. I only need to bring back the TV boxes, not the DVR/network box. I'm keeping their internet service.
Is there any advantages to keeping the DVR version of the network box? I'm thinking I would prefer the non-DVR version as I assume it does not have a hard drive, therefore my battery backup system would last longer.
So far the TV boxes are still acting as access points. 2/17/2020 8:43:03 PM |

Got online with GFBR on Jan 9th in Cary. I've been happy so far, particularly after ripping out their equipment and getting my own router running.

Spectrum offered me a 3 year contrat at $29.99 a month. I knew Google had been down my street but it had been months and still no option to sign up. I guess I will try it out in 2024. 1/14/2021 9:03:38 PM |

My new neighbor is all about this. Our apt complex can only get att and i guess 50mb per second isn’t good enough? Mentioned to me 4 times how we are slated to get fiber or whatever it is. I’m happy with 60/month. Really don’t see the need to be above that price or speed 2/6/2022 11:25:27 PM |

I got invited to sign up but didn't bother. They did recently offer me a WiFi 6 router upgrade. I took them up on that. It arrived yesterday, but wireless doesn't work on the router, and they have to send a technician with replacement equipment tomorrow. Not very impressive so far.
Also, the WiFi 6 router doesn't have power over Ethernet, so I had to plug a little power brick into the fiber jack. 7/8/2023 8:04:55 AM |

Eww. That's some BS.
I got put on a 5 Gbps plan and am using pfSense with 10G to various systems in the house. Speedtests are currently considerably higher than advertised Remote services are the bottleneck. Steam tops out at ~2.1 Gbps. Battle.net is pretty good at ~3.5 Gbps. MS/XBL sucks and rarely gets above 500 Mbps.7/10/2023 4:14:10 PM |

New information has come to light regarding the WiFi 6 router situation, including its support for port forwarding.
After I hooked my Network Box back up, the Network section on my account continued to show the WiFi 6 router instead. Eventually, the site and the mobile app both reported that my router was offline. That was true for the WiFi 6 router, but the Network Box was very much online.
I chatted with Support yesterday evening. The tech said there was a known issue with the WiFi 6 router where after hooking it up, your account doesn't get updated correctly, and you have to contact Support to get your old equipment removed from the account. Apparently, there's a plan change involved (though your monthly charge doesn't change). He also mentioned that the Network Box is supposed to be phased out completely by the end of November.
Take all that with a grain of salt, because I didn't get anything like that in the emails I've received. In fact, my initial plan change email had said this (emphasis mine):
Quote : | "Now that you're using Google Fiber Wi-Fi 6 equipment, you no longer need your Network Box. The Network Box will remain on your account as long as you're a Google Fiber customer. We recommend you return your Google Fiber device or recycle it in a way that's good for the environment and in accordance with your local regulations." |
Anyway, the tech said I would still need to switch to the new equipment. I received another plan change reflecting that the new equipment wasn't on the plan anymore and a warning that I'd need to return it within 60 days or pay fees of $90 for the router and $85 for the mesh extender.
Huge pain in the ass all around. Anyway, the tech assured me the new router does support port forwarding and that the reason I couldn't get it working is because the old Network Box was still on the account, so we'll see.

I canceled directv stream and my att fiber cost went up 10$. not a huge deal, but at 80, it makes the 2g service at 110 and particularly 5g service at 180 seem like decent value, since anything more than 1g is going to lead to me doing 10g everywhere. anyone use the 5g service? 7/19/2023 7:20:12 AM |

Worked with Support last night to sort out the equipment situation. I've got the new router hooked up and port forwarding is working. There was some issue on their end, not clear to me what that would be but anyway. 7/19/2023 11:29:23 AM |

I set up a new port forwarding rule that just did not seem to be working. After wasting my time waiting in the support queue only to get a slow typist who eventually got disconnected, I got a guy who told me the new routers have trouble getting the port forwarding rules from the auto-configuration service and that I will have to do a factory reset every time I change a rule. What the fuck. 7/24/2023 9:05:53 PM |

I don't think people are going to have a choice if the Network Box is being phased out unless they want to use their own routers. Most people probably don't bother with port forwarding anyway.
I think I'm gonna set up a reverse proxy server on my NAS and just have one rule to forward traffic there. 7/25/2023 4:35:03 PM |

Yes, but I would set up that new port forwarding rule, perform a factory reset to force the router to auto-configure from the cloud again, then be able to manage what HTTPS traffic goes where without having to set up new rules on Google Fiber's side. 7/25/2023 9:39:06 PM |
