^obviously true. But also how bad the search begins can directly impact how well (or poorly) it ends. Pruitt may be a great coach - but he wasn’t on the radar at the beginning and I cant imagine feeling overly excited about this hire as a Tennessee fan. Maybe it’ll work and he’ll be as good as fast as Kirby Smart. Or maybe he’ll be Jim McElwain. 12/7/2017 6:29:15 AM |

If Tennessee is looking at this positively, they can point to Smart and Muschamp as former Alabama coordinators turned HC and hope their programs have similar turnarounds. Although Smart took over a full cupboard and Muschamp really hasn't done anything great (State was the best team USC beat last year and he's gotten destroyed by Clemson and lost to mediocre Kentucky and Texas A&M teams this year). You just hope that Saban magic has rubbed off on Pruitt and he can revive the program.
For a more realistic view, you have to see that the Tennessee program has lost it's luster and their "historical" part doesn't really mean shit anymore. They were a laughingstock in the public eye and their name brand took a huge hit. This was maybe their 6th or 7th choice. They were basically NC State basketball during the Lowe and Gott coaching searches. Tennessee use to be able to recruit on that name brand and it's just not there like it use to be. And their stockpile of talent is a fraction of what UGA's was when Smart took over.
If they had just gotten Pruitt from the get-go, then they would have barely gotten any flak (just a few disappointed fans that still had delusions of Gruden or other big names). Instead they sullied their already declining brand even more. They are firmly behind UGA and Florida in the East and now even USC and Kentucky. Their goal for the next couple years is to make sure they don't fall back with Mizzou and Vandy and to just compete with the Cocks and Wildcats. It will be 4 or 5 years before they can hope to win an East title....and that's if Pruitt turns out to be a good coach. 12/7/2017 8:21:37 AM |

^If the rumors of Fulmer intentionally tanking the search in hopes of becoming the AD are true, then it makes sense. Fulmer probably had "his guy" picked out from the start and was just making Currie out to look like a moron by getting the board to reject every offer that came to them. 12/7/2017 9:29:26 AM |

Definitely a possibility. Doesn't make them look any better. 12/7/2017 10:05:45 AM |

Say what you want, but Fulmer made a better hire than Schiano. The previous AD was a chode. 12/7/2017 10:25:11 AM |

And Fulmer is a vindictive little baby. And their adminstration is a bunch of idiots for giving the guy they fired as head coach and then passed over for AD last year a position of power/influence, which clearly led to this whole debacle.
It's funny, really. 12/7/2017 10:33:23 AM |

the whole thing is absurd...not sure i'd be super pumped to go work for a guy that just sabotaged the previous AD in order to get him fired. but maybe it'll work out.
Quote : | "they can point to Smart and Muschamp as former Alabama coordinators turned HC and hope their programs have similar turnarounds." |
muschamp flamed out pretty badly at UF....not sure the Muschamp comparison is gonna inspire a ton of confidence in Tennessee fans. but i do get your point. SCar was a solid team this year and he seems to be doing a good job there, although it's very early.
kudos to Miss St and Arkansas for having at least an ounce of creativity with their hires.12/7/2017 11:15:47 AM |
jbrick83 All American 23447 Posts user info edit post |
But Muschamp at UF was pre-Saban. I think the general line of thinking is that Saban rubs off on his coordinators...but whatever.
It's an incredibly safe, mediocre hire. It's a South Carolina, Mississippi State type of hire...not a wannabe-historical program type of hire. But hey...it's great if it works out! 12/7/2017 12:17:16 PM |

Muschamp was a Saban assistant at LSU (and for the dolphins), which was definitely not after his days as HC at Florida. 12/7/2017 12:32:34 PM |

yeah muschamp was HC at UF (duh), then spent one season as Auburn's DC before taking the SCar HC job. 12/7/2017 12:36:12 PM |

Tennessee fans just need to hope Pruitt can give the starting QB to the best QB on the team. That was Muschamp's problem at Florida, his best QBs transferred after not being the starter. 12/7/2017 12:57:33 PM |

This will forever be the turning point where TennU realizes that its a lesser than job than Purdue or NC State.

Pruitt has an interesting coaching career.
He jumped from FSU after a year to UGA for 2 years and then to Bama for 2 years, now he's a HC at UT.
It's going to be interesting, because he's had a TON of talent to work with at his last 3 stops. Will be interesting who he brings on to round out his staff. 12/7/2017 1:41:26 PM |

Smart move too! Averaging about 9+ wins a season at NCSU = greatest coach ever. Averaging 9+ wins at Tennessee = you're fired!12/7/2017 3:36:19 PM |

so about pruitt leaving FSU
it's all rumor and his personal affairs don't really matter but
Quote : | " Later in the week, a rumor emerged that Pruitt departed Tallahassee because he was having an affair with a woman in the athletic department and that once his fiancée found out, she presumably gave him an option that included leaving town. Pruitt chose to leave town." |

DD has not averaged anywhere close to 9 wins here at NCSU.
6.6 wins is his average...mediocre at best in 5 years. 12/7/2017 4:22:24 PM |
