It's so funny that these two coaches are so good at key aspects of the game but so bad at things like clock and risk management, and I guess knowing the rules! 2/12/2024 11:00:05 AM |

Huh? KC players knew the rules to start the season and prepared. The Chiefs clock management to end regulation was a little suspect, but they also went conservative to not lose. 2/12/2024 12:47:26 PM |

That 3rd and 1 or 2nd and 1 play where it seemed like Kelce got the first, Reid called a timeout but didn't challenge, that was bad. That's the only instance I can think of last night but Reid has a history of non ideal clock management.
Although above, I misread I guess Kyle knew the OT rules he just didn't discuss it with players. 2/12/2024 1:06:10 PM |

Yeah the block I quoted from the article didn’t mention it, but later in the article it was mentioned. Shanahan knew the rules but it apparently wasn’t something the team had practiced or discussed.
I think both sides (kick or receive) have valid points. And there’s probably not a universal right or wrong decision, it probably varies situationally. But for me, I don’t want to give Mahomes (of all QBs!!) the ball with a chance to walk it off. And I think Shanahan was also short sighted to think that if the teams traded TDs, KC would just kick the XP 2/12/2024 1:50:05 PM |

Was this the play in overtime where they clearly gained enough for a first down but were spotted short? Because they're were multiple instances in overtime where they absolutely should have used instant replay but failed to do so.2/12/2024 2:20:03 PM |

^^^ I agree on the bad spot - no challenge calls. There were at least two I remember being like 3rd and inches, but no one thought to challenge the spot. Maybe they really wanted to conserve timeouts? The Chiefs were very methodic in their overtime drive. Some of the people watching the game by me did not know that there would be 2 overtime periods. They thought the clock was going to run out on the Chiefs at the end of the first OT and that would be a sudden death loss.

The one I’m thinking of specifically was the Chiefs last drive of regulation. I think the first play of that drive. But yeah I thought there was another couple in OT that could be reviewed and weren’t 2/12/2024 2:41:40 PM |

Assuming that would have been the first nlf game to go into a 6th quarter?
I think the OT decision seems 50/50 or the slightest edge to receiving the ball. Zero reason to criticize that today other than they lost so any decision is basically wrong at that point. 2/12/2024 3:41:08 PM |

Ah ok. The only memorable plays for me were the field goals
^disagree. There is a definite advantage to knowing how many points you need. The only way it's not advantageous is if the second team for some ungodly reason decided to tie the game (on a FG or TD) rather than attempting to win on their possession. The first team possessing the ball has to play it a little safer and kick a fg because being stopped on a 4th down and turning the ball over is a likely loss by FG. It's not nearly as big an advantage as regular season overtime rules, but it's still an advantage to win the toss (and kick in the playoffs.) it's similar to college overtime in that way - the advantage to being on offense second is that you know how many points you need to score. ] 2/12/2024 3:54:26 PM |

At the start of OT they said all reviews are upstairs, I interpreted that to mean no challenges. So lack of review in OT isn't on coaches.

The one I mean they explicitly called a timeout and it was late enough for there to be very little value to 'save' challenges2/12/2024 4:27:07 PM |

Yes this is what I feel like has been overlooked in the discussion. Saw the SF decision criticized on Twitter last night when it happened. And the rebuttal was “they’ll get the ball first in a sudden death situation if it’s still tied after each team has a possession”. Technically true. But Andy Reid and Mahomes weren’t gonna let SF get it back. Win or lose, I think they wanted to make sure the game ended on their drive. Which is the right decision. I mean I guess if both teams fail to score then getting the ball back is great but that seems like you’re banking on an unlikely scenario.
To me it boils down to…I don’t wanna give Mahomes the ball with a chance to walk it off. That’s not a position I’d want to paint myself into.

This play happened on chiefs second to last drive down near their own goal line, mahommes called the TO though
On to the coin toss decision. You absolutely kick the ball. It is an advantage to know what you have to accomplish.2/12/2024 5:22:29 PM |

Larry Allen is probably the greatest OG in NFL history. Peppers probably isn't even in the top 10 of defensive ends, so no his career was not better. 6/6/2024 11:17:09 AM |
