^^ I guess lightning just seemed a lot less significant to me than a tornado touching down and killing a few people.

I used to live right outside of Springfield, so I've been watching all my friends/neighbors posting trees on houses and whatnot. Anything else going on in the state seems kind of insignificant, but I guess if you live in Boston atm it might be a different story.

^ sorry to hear that, hopefully all your friends and family are okay. We haven't had anything other than a good thunderstorm.

That tornado crossed the Connecticut less than a mile before the basketball hall of fame. I had friends ready to loot if it went a tad further south .

While overall the tornado might not have been strong as the storms down here, a lot of the buildings in western mass are a LOT older, thus a lot more susceptible to a tornado. We had several in my town that were 200+ years old. Almost every building along our main road through town (Main Street...) was at least 100.

Also, I hate to see the property damage for obvious reasons, but honestly, maybe this will be the spark that is needed to not make Springfield a completely shitty city. Hopefully they'll rebuild, and rebuild it without all the...shittyness.

There's no doubt that this year is exceptional. But the trend is discern because there are more people around now to report tornadoes. Technology to forecast and detect tornadoes has also vastly improved since the 50s.

Plus there have been a lot that have hit major population centers this year. If they were all strolling through corn fields no one would even notice the increased numbers.

We need a term to say "it's exactly the same as 20 years ago - it's just that you find out faster via your twitter feed or we have a better method of detecting the phenomenon - it's not actually getting worse"

"Temperature soars to 102 after midnight Thursday in 'heat burst'

Jerilyn Billings thought she had been teleported from Wichita to the desert. "It was like I was in Phoenix," she said in a Facebook post.

It was no wonder — the temperature as 1 a.m. neared on Thursday had climbed to 102.

Readings surged 17 degrees in 20 minutes — from 85 at 12:22 a.m. to 102 at 12:42 a.m. It's almost certainly the first time the temperature has soared into triple digits after midnight in Wichita, weather officials said.

The spike was the result of a heat burst, which occurs when dry air plummets to the Earth's surface as a thunderstorm collapses, meteorologists said. As the air nears the ground, it heats dramatically."

I drove through the storm that's about to come through Raleigh as it went through Greensboro. It poured like hell and there was a little bit of hail. Was very very close to pulling over.

It's my caffeine, and I need it now!

Seriously I have a massive headache and can't tell whether I'm fighting the hangover or the caffeine withdrawal. I can fix one of these with a quick trip to the store during a thunderstorm! *flee*

I've got mints but they aren't acceptable.

My journey in the weaksauce rain involved:

* People driving 10 under the speed limit because it was wet outside.

* Parking in a large puddle of child puke.

* Fixing one of the battery terminals in the rain so the car would start.

* Encountering one of the whiniest little tv-obsessed shitheads I've seen in weeks.

But I have caffeine.

its already going away though it seems like. never really got close. rained some big drops for a few mins, still dripping (maybe) a little right now. but the thunder is going away and it isn't as dark/windy as it was a few mins ago
