The America's Cup is a great event but it is not a "professional sport" in the common use of the term.
whoa whoa whoa... nobody's ever been PAID to participate in the America's Cup!??!?!?
You've got to be shitting me. Its been a rich-boy's event for at least the past century. Crews are paid and have been paid for a long time.
One america's cup campaign takes over $50million to compete, and you'd better bring $100mil to the table to even think about winning.
That isn't spent all on boat. Every single fucking person on the boat is PAID to be there by their syndicate. They are PROFESSIONAL sailors. There is an international governing body (ISAF) that maintains statuses of all amateur/professional out there.
I'm sorry, but the Americas Cup is definitely Professional.

I'm wondering how many people will show up for this parade. It's in the middle of the day. . .
but hell yeah for one downtown. far better than a parking lot.

^^^i think we're looking at the common definition of "professional sport".... not the common definition of "professional"
America's Cup is not commonly considered a "professional sport"... I don't care how many custies have been participating for however long 6/20/2006 4:27:20 PM |
sarijoul All American 14208 Posts user info edit post |
and what exactly is that definition? 6/20/2006 4:30:55 PM |
nchockey All American 1751 Posts user info edit post |
i would think it would be defined as whatever is commonly recognized as a professional sport
Question: Which of the following is your favorite professional sport?
A) Football B) Baseball C) Basketball D) Soccer E) Hockey F) Boating
Answer: BOATING!!!!!
i dont think so..... 6/20/2006 4:45:31 PM |

so all you're saying is that boating isn't popular?? i hate to call you out, but worldwide, hockey wouldn't be far ahead of boating as far as popularity.

I don't think you understand what I am saying. No one is calling the America's Cup amateur or saying that it doesn't require money. When someone says "professional sports" in this country you can bank on them referring to pretty much just US-based top tier professional leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, PGA, PBA, MLS, NASCAR, etc). On top of that, the America's Cup is an event, not a season championship. It falls more in line with something like the Little Brown Jug, the Green Jacket of the Masters, and the Claret Jug (which is older than the FA Cup and the Stanley Cup, btw).6/20/2006 4:56:14 PM |

i'm not saying its defined as what is popular
i'm saying it is defined as what is commonly recognized as a "professional sport" in america
i guarantee if you took a poll: which sport is least considered professional? and listed the above sports, boating would win in a landslide
not saying boating sucks or isnt a sport....

We were talking about this statement, in case you didnt remember.
We were talking about what is the common use of the term "professional sport", not what makes a sport "professional", in a dry sense.

so if most americans don't watch it, it's not a professional sport?
soccer is not a professional sport. neither is sumo wrestling. or or or the list could go on and on. in my head "common use" of the term professional means players are getting paid to participate.
college basketball != a professional sport NBA basketball = professional sport minor league arena football = professional sport world class yacht racing = professional sport. 6/20/2006 5:12:33 PM |

also if you asked most americans what the reason for the seasons is, they'd be wrong.

tom is an idiot and that was a horrible article, i am going to call him and im going to email him tomorrow, and im going to call the primetime whiner line. but like i have posted about last night...Last night was great. It was worth every penny for my ticket. I am a diehard sports fan in general but this so far is the coolest thing I have ever been to. Game 7 Stanley Cup Finals...I was way uptop and it was still great. Tailgating was insane, inside was insane (ringing my cowbell all night and drinking beer), outside was crazy and then down to glennwood last night was unbelievable. Stayed for the parade and everything today at the RBC and that was great. My only complaint could be about the cops last night outside the RBC, on glennwood, and in general. They allowed some fun but not the type that should happen for winning the stanley cup!!! I had goosebumps and teared up a little bit too last night. GO CANES!!! 6/21/2006 1:39:27 AM |

America's Cup Trophy - 1851 (oldest trophy still in use) Scottish FA Cup - 1873 (oldest trophy for team sport still in use, English FA Cup started in 1872, but has had 4 different trophies) Stanley Cup - 1892
So lets just say that the Stanley Cup is "the oldest trophy in team sports that Americans care about".

I can go ahead and all but guarantee playoffs. I'm not going to guess where, though. The Crapitals are going to be a nasty team next season. Trust me.
Overall, though, I'd have to say that it's way too early to be talking about next season. The new Cup smell isn't even out of the bandwagon yet. 6/21/2006 10:57:53 AM |

The America's Cup may be considered a professional sport now, but in 1851 it was a challenge.
Of course Hockey may not have been considered a professional sport at the time the Lord Stanley had the cup made. The Stanley Cup was called the "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup" originally.
Or you can believe that everyone is just lying about it the Stanley cup being the oldest trophy
