D40s are small and light, very little shutter vibration.
I was out shooting some shots of the moon tonight; they're all crap though since I don't have a tripod.

On the upside, my fiancee bought me an 8GB SDHC card for my birthday today.

The link I posted was an illustration of mirror vibration on a D200, which I believe uses the same size mirror as the d40.
I'm certainly no expert on the subject, but I'm guessing since those two cameras have the same size mirror and the d40 has less size and weight to its body it could actually suffer more vibration than the d200.
Sure we're not talking about the same vibration that you get with something like a Pentax 67, but if you're looking for the best possible sharpness then why not use mirror lock up. I use MLU all the time when I'm shooting with a tripod in low light situations, especially if I'm bracketing and blending and can't afford to have any slight changes in the subject over different exposures.

I had to use the flash though to be able to see anything and of course I know I shouldn't have used the flash because it doesn't reach the moon! I'm not an expert in any way, still learning and I've never taken a course in photography. It looks SO clear through the viewfinder, just crap on screen

well the first three steps are use a tripod, turn that ISO down from 800 to 100 and do not use the flash.

well the first few photos I took without the flash were pure black, so I tried the flash (knowing of course it wouldn't reach that far) and I could at least see a resemblance of the moon...

the screen kept bugging me with 'subject is too dark' so I couldnt figure out what else to do - still doesn't make much sense that I used the flash, but you have to learn from your mistakes, right? didnt hit me until after I used the flash though, ummmm its kinda 220k miles away

yeah, the first one's a little snapshotish, but everyone takes that photo at the beach. At least the horizon is level. I don't like the second one at all, way too much sky that is uninteresting.

that could have been a great "cliche'd beach photo", you had good leading lines (the boardwalks or whatever they're called) and the shore, you could have had great light, but instead you have a shot that was clearly taken by a guy standing straight up (hint: eye-level is not always the best shot, in fact it almost never is) and has a pvc shower as the focus

can someone take a good photo of the pvc shower head? sure, but its not going to be juxtaposed against what could have been a better than average "cliche'd beach photo"

here is another hint

try to do as much "cropping, etc" as you can "In Camera"

are you using partial/spot metering? are you moving the camera after you've focused on a subject?

the problem is 90% of people can now be 80% as good as some of the best photographers out there if they pay enough money and take enough time

so there is basically a lot of competition to look like you're hitting that other 20%

And yeah, I agree with Woodfoot. Unfortunately, most people are easily tricked into believing someone is a legitimate photographer based solely on their possession of a DSLR. Most people can't really differentiate too much between a quality image and a mediocre-at-best image that is good quality and has some depth of field. The introduction of consumer level digital SLR's certainly changed the amount of people in the game, and it gave amateurs an opportunity to produce better quality stuff, but there is still no substitute for a bit of knowledge and creativity. Whether or not you have an entry level Nikon with a kit lens or bags of the newest pro-level gear doesn't matter if you still don't really know what you're doing or why you're doing it.

on the same note i know lots of people who think people who have dslrs aren't legitimate because its too easy.

these people, of course, are regular slr users.printwork.
and have my utmost respect.

i also know a chick who take amazing polaroid pictures (no joking...these pics are pretty freaking sweeeet.)

i think creativity has a lot more to do with it than people give credit for.

I bought the Canon 50mm f1.4, and I am completely blown away by the kind of hand-held, no flash shots it can get in very low lighting situations.

Now if only the guy on the other end of the view finder pushing buttons were a little better at what he did...

That's why I own an ELPH P&S... (which to this point I still have better pictures from than my D40... working on that) to be able to carry in my pocket and not worry about smacking a lens out of alignment.

Like yesterday, I needed the piece of a sliding close door that clips into the top rail... took picture with elph, took to hardware store, 1 employee and 2 minutes later I had it in my hand... freaking awesome

two questions

1. how many of you guys use AEB? once i finally moved up to a gig memory card instead of just 512s, i started using it, and i realize now i should have been doing it forever...

2. we talked about it back on like page 5 (back when i had my first tww relapse lol) but did anyone ever get into lomography? i picked up one of their fisheye models a while ago and have had a ton of fun with it; they have the Fisheye 2 out now that i may pick up, it has a hotshoe for better flashes

its a $30 plastic toy camera, you get a lot of odd light leaks after you bang it around too many times...

sometimes it makes awesome looking stuff, sometimes it runs right through the middle of an exposure and sucks ass...

it def adds some "old school" street cred, in my mind

That can be said about almost anything... If you spend enough time learning one subject and practice, you end up getting better and better. Definitely the learning curve of today's DSLR reduces the time it used to take to learn about photography, but if you still don't have the fundamentals and a sense of creativity, I wouldn't put my money against pro photogs. It's all about knowing your equipment and working within your constraints. There's definately a lot of good, free sources to learn from.

This is the internet... not real life; last time I checked this thread is in chit chat.

Out of all of the photogs I've meet thus far in person, I've ran into maybe 2 or 3 asshole photographers. Since going to RCC, it really opened my eyes of how close knit the world of photographers are, it's definately like a family, specially photojourns. It's really cool to spend time and understudy the pro's where ever I go. The real assholes are the fashion photog's. Grrr.

I'd say that most photographers are quirky, crazy and polite.
