I believe he was asking for the motor boat that they were on when they stole Walt from the raft. Desmond was in a sailboat in his race around the world. He said he crashed on the island, but he gave no indication of how bad the damage was. If it was minimal, then when Locke came and "relieved" Desmond of his duty, he jumped back in the boat and tried to GTFO. Unfortunately, the island seems to have a bit of a "drawing" power that brought him back. (or he ran out of food or sprung a leak or wanted to hang out with Kate or something)
