I'd upgrade your D40 to another camera that could focus either of the two lenses before you buy them. That or buy an old MF 50mm off ebay.

^lol we tried but the combination of beer and getting the exposure timing right wasn't working out too well. the closest we got to anything with a pattern was my friend doing the four points, then quickly stepping to the left and doing the circle.
It was my friends point-n-shoot. Kinda cool though.

I read some reviews and then took my camera to the store and tried both out to decide which one I wanted. I would recommend this approach, as everyone's opinion on "worthiness of cost" is going to be different.12/19/2008 5:41:11 PM |

I'm pretty sure southeastern camera's will have those two on hand for you to try out. Just bring your camera and test it out. Peace will do the same, but they just seem a little less friendly to amateurs when I started out. Plus southeatern will let you rent lens for cheap, even cut you a good deal if you are still a student. 12/19/2008 6:00:16 PM |

^ If you can spare the extra cash get the d90. If you are considering the d60 you may want to look at the d40 not much difference. 12/21/2008 2:39:36 PM |

i'm fairly certain Maximillion has officially shit the bed
when i take a photo now it just says loading and does nothing
so i have the recurring threat of my photos coming out as corrupt data or not even transferring from the camera's buffer memory to the memory card
this sucks... 12/21/2008 2:40:36 PM |

My D40 works great in the cold. Took a few shots, nothing amazing, I just think the snow here is crazy. Still in Wisconsin, right now it's -3F outside w/wind chill of -30F. Earlier today it was -8F w/ wind chill of -35F.

Yeah -- the shots were pretty dark over the past day or two. However, it's interesting trying to do that with 30mph winds whipping snow around and thick gloves on. 12/21/2008 6:38:30 PM |

I have the XS. Spec-wise it's on par with the D60. Canon seems to handle noise better than Nikon at this price point from what I can tell. I shoot at ISO 800 all the time and have yet to notice any noise. The guy across from me at work has a D60 and I can see all kinds of grain in some of his shots. That's just my opinion though, could be totally wrong...
Best bet is to go to a store and hold both of them. That makes a big difference. A lot of people complain that the XS is cramped but I have no problems. Also check out dpreview for more details.12/22/2008 3:08:30 PM |

hey all i know this is an SLR thread, but i know this is where all the photog's hang out.
i have a Sony DSC-H5, which is an SLR-like and i've posted a few photos in here, but it's still a bit big (and expensive to replace) to take on 'active' trips like skiing, snowshoeing, etc, where there's a possibility of me falling on it, or it getting wet so i'm looking for an good ultra-compact for <$120, i'm not looking for anything over that.
Here are my top 2 picks:
Nikon Coolpix S210 Digital Camera http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=NKCPS210K
Fujifilm FINEPIX J10 8 MP Digital Camera http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=FJFPJ10K
what would you guys recommend? 12/22/2008 9:25:44 PM |

I've seen them on sell for around 120. From my experience with point and shoots Canon is very good. 12/22/2008 9:40:06 PM |

^^can't find it for under $145, anywhere.
while i don't doubt they are good cameras, at $150, that's 50% more than the current price range i'm looking at. i would probably get it if i didn't just need a small cheap camera, thanks though for the recommendation. 12/23/2008 12:22:14 AM |

The Nikon S210 is really slim. It's one of the slimmest cameras I've held. ^Great price for that camera too. Really, just go with any of the three cameras, they'll all take perfect fine mediocre pictures. 12/23/2008 1:36:57 AM |

Thinking about picking up a Canon Rebel XSI for Christmas, I can get one for about $675+tax for the body and the 18-55 lens. Any comments about this camera? This would be my first DSLR, but I reallly would like one for my trip to europe this summer.
