I thought I'd add those to clarify. Glad to have him aboard. 6'2"/212/4.5 sounds good to me.

I'll vouch for Maurice, for what it's worth.

I have covered him for The Free Press the last two years. I've watched him break multiple tackles and then run away from secondaries on more than one occasion. Good speed, great awareness on the field, and he's not afraid to hit or get hit.

He also plays basketball for North Lenoir, and he has a pretty impressive vertical.

Not to mention he's a genuinely good kid.

I'm excited that he signed for us.

Name: Maurice Morgan
Hometown: LaGrange, North Carolina
School: North Lenior High School
Position: Athlete

Vitals: 6'2/215 LaGrange (NC) North Lenoir athlete Maurice Morgan committed to NC State on Tuesday after securing an offer from the Wolfpack over the weekend. He chose NC State over an offer from East Carolina and was receiving interest from North Carolina.

Morgan had a solid junior season playing tailback, wide receiver, safety and special teams for North Lenior. He rushed for nearly 700 yards in limited reps, but athletically he projects as a wide receiver or safety on the next level. NC State is recruiting Morgan as an athlete."He's an outstanding athlete," said North Lenoir Head Coach Calvin Sutton. "I've been told he could be the sleeper in the state. We're talking about a young man who is 6-foot-2, 213 pounds and consistently runs a 4.4.

"He has all the physical tools you're looking for, and he is also a great kid."

I think we have a good shot at LB Jeffrey Lark. He hopes to make a decision by the end of August since he wants to enroll early. Reports say he was impressed with his visit. He would either be a big safety or an outside linebacker on the college level.

Seems like he's a good fit for Tech's offense, but I just don't understand how any QB who has aspirations to play in the NFL would choose Tech. They might pass it a little more once they have an actually QB who can throw the ball, but it's still going to be a run oriented offense and you won't be featured or get familiar with an NFL type offense. Add that to the fact that you are going to take an absolute beating running that triple option during you career there. If I were recruiting against Tech, I would slam that into the recruits' heads. I would pitch the same shit to top WR's going there as well. You want to hone your downfield blocking skills?? Go to Georgia Tech.

must be a typo. I didn't think UNC was ever a factor. Wake has always been there.

Also, I liked this:

Quote :
"There has been a lot of speculation that Lee may fit best in the Georgia Tech offense, but Lee hasn't put much thought into the style of play.

"That's not really important to me because I feel like I can play in any of the systems my three schools use," he said."

I feel it's sort of a big deal considering the way our recruiting has gone so far this summer. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if we were like our ACC rivals and already had 10-15 recruits in the bag. At this point, the barrel is drying up and I'm desperate to snag any decent local prospects we can get.

Honestly I feel like whoever the new coach is next year will be starting completely from scratch, so this year's class (which will be very small) isn't really catching my attention like usual.

we were a factor until marquis williams committed. it's interesting because most people seem to think his future is at receiver or some other skill position, yet he seems adamant about playing qb. i'd rather yall get him, because i'd hate to think of pj having a qb that could actually throw the ball as well as run.

We recently offered QB Brian Taylor. He grew up an NC State fan and will probably commit pretty soon.

http://www.highschoolot.com/content/blogpost/8164459/

"Harnett Central QB Taylor picks up offer from N.C. State

By Nick Stevens

Harnett Central quarterback Brian Taylor has picked up an offer from N.C. State, according to Harnett Central head football coach Patrick Turner.

Taylor, who grew up an N.C. State fan, completed 157-of-254 passes for 2,218 yards and 15 touchdowns last season as a junior at Harnett Central. He also ran for over 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Turner said Taylor may make a decision as soon as Friday.

The Trojans went undefeated in the regular season, winning the Greater Neuse River Conference title and advancing to the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 4-A state championship. In the school's first year at the 4-A level, Harnett Central finished as the state runner-up, falling to A.C. Reynolds in the state championship game, 14-13.

Taylor is listed at 6-foot-3 and 200-pounds and is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com.

In addition to the offer from the Wolfpack, Taylor posts offers from Clemson, East Carolina and North Carolina.

Harnett Central opens the season on Friday at Apex. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m."

^^I think it was more like we already liked this kid, but with the small chance that we still get Vad Lee, we didn't want to scare off Vad by jumping the gun and offering another QB too early.

^I think we were giving Lee the opportunity to play QB here. If we weren't, then he wouldn't have seriously considering us.

except Knight is now being classified as a FB - ranked 5th in the class by Rivals.

A target lost to another school is still a loss. We offered a scholly, so we probably needed him. The question is: how strong is the need at the RB position?

I'm sorry, tl. I didn't realize you were ON the coaching staff. Since you know that we shut down RB recruiting, please, inform us on the staff's direction at the other positions for the remainder of the season.

I was simply trying to point out to everyone that we've lost several recruiting battles lately and that it was starting to get ridiculous. I understand that it's not as bad that Crockett didn't pick us since we already have a ballrunner in Knight. Shit, I've never even heard of Crockett. He just happened to be on the list of recent commits.

You are the one making inane assumptions about recruiting, not the other way around. Keep assuming the sky is falling because we missed out on a few 3 star prospects over the summer, nobody with any sense is losing sleep over it.

good write-up on Taylor in today's paper:

http://www2.journalnow.com/content/2010/aug/25/two-sport-star-commits-to-wolfpack/sports/

Two-sport star commits to Wolfpack

Quote :
"Brian Taylor has spent many a Saturday at N.C. State's Carter-Finley Stadium as a spectator. Starting next season, he will be there as a player.

Taylor, a 6-3, 200-pound quarterback from Angier and Harnett Central High School, committed on Monday.

Taylor becomes the sixth member of the Wolfpack's recruiting class and the fourth from in state.

North Carolina was the first program to offer a scholarship to Taylor, who also had offers from Clemson and East Carolina. His father is an N.C. State alumnus.

"I've been around the school a lot," Taylor said. "I really like the campus and just the school overall. I like the coaching staff up there. I guess I'm just an N.C. State fan.

"I always wanted an offer from them. It was something I was hoping to get. When they did offer me, I was already looking to make a decision, and I definitely liked State over any other schools."

Taylor, a senior, has been a starter since the ninth grade but is in his first season under Coach Patrick Turner. SuperPrep magazine lists Taylor as the No. 35 senior in the state.

Taylor helped Harnett Central to a season-opening win against Apex last week, completing 16 of 22 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns and running for two more touchdowns.

"His consistency is his best trait," Turner said.

Taylor, who also kicks, has led Harnett Central to a 28-3 record in his career. Last season, he completed 149 of 251 passes for 1,997 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 1,213 yards and 11 touchdowns on 177 carries.

Taylor also plays basketball and baseball and plans to play baseball at N.C. State. He had a 5-0 record and 0.98 earned-run average last spring and batted .470 with 10 home runs.

"He has a strong arm," Turner said. "He throws it 90 (miles an hour) in baseball.""

hopefully our recruiting will pick up during the season as a result

Recruiting aided by switch to morning practices

Quote :
"NC State will be even more aggressive in football recruiting this season thanks to morning practices.

NCSU fourth-year coach Tom O'Brien didn't switch to morning practices because of recruiting, but it is a nice by-product of the move. Some of the main reasons for the switch to the morning are that the weather is less volatile in the morning, the players have the rest of the day for their academic work, and both players and coaches will be fresher. The Wolfpack usually wrap up practice by 10:45 a.m., and sometimes as early as 10 a.m.

" I think it will help us better with our academics and class, and everything else," O'Brien said. "By 11 or noon, we'll be finished here, and they'll go back to campus, and can go be students, get all their work done, and be finished with football for the day.

"The coaches will be fresher too when they walk off the field Thursday. It will get them out for recruiting if they want to leave Thursday, instead of running off the field Thursday night and make air planes."

O'Brien investigated the benefits of morning practices with some of peers in college football. NCSU defensive coordinator Mike Archer also had a history of morning practices when he held the same position at Kentucky.

O'Brien joked that they've been practicing at practicing early leading up to the season opener against Western Carolina on Sept. 4.

"[Former coach] Ted Roof did it at Duke, and [current Blue Devils coach David] Cutcliffe is still doing it at Duke," O'Brien said. "I think Rutgers is going to go to it, and I know Central Florida does it. I've talked to George O'Leary at length about it."

The players will have at least 48 hours before playing Saturday to rest up or work on nagging injuries.

"We'll be a much fresher football team with our rest from Thursday-on," O'Brien said. "Our kids go over here, and then they go back, and then they go over here, and then go back. I think when Russell [Wilson] was a freshman, he asked if he gets gas money for all the times he comes back and forth [from campus to the football complex]."

Recruiting coordinator Jerry Petercuskie said the Wolfpack sometimes send seven coaches on the road for prep football games or to stop by high schools. Colleges have 42 evaluation days to use from September through November. The NCAA also passed a rule this year where 10 coaches can recruit on the road during a seven-day span.

"I think it will be a good change for us in that we are hustling to make a plane trip, especially now in this day and age with airports," Petercuskie said. "It's going to be a big boost for us to get to where we need to go.

"We can go out on Thursday's. Certain guys can go out, [but] other guys have certain responsibilities on Friday's. We can get a number of guys out on a Thursday in the early afternoon, which is good. We can go see a number of different schools during the day, and that's the biggest advantage."

A common sight during past Thursday's practices was watching an assistant coach hustling off the field because he needed to get somewhere for a prep game. Petercuskie said every coach has a story about trying to get somewhere and then having the situation end negatively.

"I remember going to Dallas [while at Boston College], and I spent all day and never got to Dallas, and ended up getting back to Boston around midnight," Petercuskie said. "I never touched foot in Dallas. We ended up getting re-routed to Austin [Texas], and we sat on the tarmac for seven hours. They got us back to Dallas, and I just got on another plane and went home. [The family of the recruits] didn't appreciate that because they wanted to see me."

NC State might be able to recruit some different areas because of the timelier traveling situation.

"It's going to be easier to travel to the Midwest, or even easier to travel down South," Petercuskie said.

NC State also has road games this year at Central Florida, Georgia Tech, Clemson and Maryland. The staff will actively recruit in those areas the day before the game.

"We are playing Central Florida, and we'll be able to get out to the Orlando area, and that helps also," Petercuskie said.

Redshirt junior running back Curtis Underwood doesn't think the morning practices have needed much adjusting. The players' work out in the mornings during the offseason.

"It's a plus for us to get everything done early," Underwood said. "I'm going to be able to get in an watch film, and I won't be as tired going through the whole day. You'll have a fresh mind, and just have classes the rest of the day, and then coming back and getting some extra work done. Coach knows what he's doing, and I have faith in the system."

O'Brien said they'll still be some tinkering and already has some ideas for next year.

"We've got guys who have 11:45 a.m. classes, so we're trying to get them in there, showered and getting them a bite to eat and making sure they get to class on time," O'Brien said. "That's the hurdle we face with this. Other schools who do this don't really start school until 1 p.m. or later."

Underwood joked that another by-product is that the players are now all going to bed earlier.

"That's a given," Underwood said. "You have to train yourself, and treat your body right. Then everything will work out."

O'Brien's desire for an indoor practice facility hasn't been altered by the switch to morning practices. He pointed out that if inclement weather interrupted a practice, the team won't be able to adjust and make up for the lost time later in the day.

"If [there] is lightning and thunder, which it generally doesn't do in the morning, then we would have to get off the field, just as we would in the afternoon," O'Brien said. "Until we have an indoor facility, we are on the field, rain or shine.""

great read on TOB and Recruiting

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=5515956

Quote :
"Tom O'Brien is a winner. After 10 seasons at Boston College he certainly left the program in better shape than he found it. In fact, over his last six years with the Eagles his record was 52-22. Not too many coaches have had a six-year run like that, which is why North Carolina State made a play for him after the 2006 season.

Three seasons later, O'Brien has guided NC State to a disappointing 16-21 record, including seasons of 5-7, 6-7 and 5-7. That's not so bad, considering when O'Brien arrived in Raleigh he needed to re-tool the entire Wolfpack roster. O'Brien and his staff were very successful developing players at Boston College and in terms of recruiting, one would believe it's far easier to recruit at NC State than Boston College. There are more prospects in the area/region and certainly the academic requirements are a lighter at NC. State than BC.

[+] Enlarge
Tim Steadman/Icon SMI
NC State coach Tom O'Brien only has six commits at this time, but he's rebuilding the Wolfpack.
On top of that, practically O'Brien's entire Eagles staff headed South with him, including Dana Bible (offensive coordinator), Jason Swepson (running back coach), Jim Bridge (tight end coach), Don Horton (offensive line coach), Keith Willis (defensive line coach) and Jerry Petercuskie (recruiting coordinator). When it comes to recruiting, stability is a big key with many of the recruits.

Who the Wolfpack have
While NC State may lag behind the rest of college football with its six commitments, much of that is due to the fact that this won't be a very big class. It appears that the Wolfpack should sign somewhere between 16 and 18 kids when it's all said and done.

The Wolfpack have a lone quarterback commit in Brian Taylor, who commands a shotgun spread offense at Harnett High School in Angier, N.C. He has good size (6-foot-2, 200 pounds), throws with accuracy -- especially in the short passing game, has good arm strength and is a deceptive runner. Last season as a junior he threw for 1,997 yards and 16 touchdowns, as well as rushed for 1,213 yards and 11 scores.

Running back Anthony Knight (Groton, Mass./ Lawrence Academy) rushed for 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior. The 5-11, 205-pounder runs well between the tackles. His cousin, Derrick Knight, was a running back at Boston College, which is a natural tie to O'Brien and his staff.

"There were many reasons why I picked NC State," said Knight. "I love their facilities, the state of North Carolina and all the surroundings. Plus, they love to run the ball there and I will have a great opportunity. The coaching staff is great and I know I will learn and grow as a player under them."

Three-star prospect Juston Burris (Raleigh, N.C./ Needham Broughton) is a really good football player who has the ability to help out the Wolfpack in all three phases of the game. As a receiver, he's tough to handle in the open field thanks to his good size (6-0, 180 pounds), ability to break tackles or flat-out run away from defenders. Defensively, he shows good range from his safety position and can make plays in coverage or in run support. Burris is also an excellent kick and punt return man. Last season he recorded 86 tackles, two interceptions and returned two kickoffs for scores.

"My parents went to school at NC State," said Burris. "So I was always a big fan. When they offered me a scholarship it was like a dream come true. It's close to home and I have been going to games ever since I can remember. I have always been around campus and the coaches. Coach O'Brien and his coaches are serious and they know what they are doing and what they are talking about. They are teachers trying to make the football players better people."

NC State landed another athlete in Maurice Morgan (LaGrange, N.C./ North Lenoir), who runs in the 4.4 range. It will be very interesting to see what side of the ball the 6-1, 212-pounder ends up at for the Wolfpack. He could be a running back, safety or even linebacker.

NC State's Class of 2011
Winning at Boston College hasn't translated to NC State for Tom O'Brien, but he has the Wolfpack going in the right direction.
2011 commit list

Two special teams players are committed to N.C. State as well in long snapper Scott Thompson (Mission Viejo, Calif./ Trabuco) and punter Will Baumann (Wilmington, N.C./ John T. Hoggard), who averaged 44.8 yards per punt last season.

Who the Wolfpack still want
They would like to land some more defensive help with the rest of this class. The Wolfpack are hot after defensive tackles Darian Cooper (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha), Ben Bradley (Norcross, Ga./Norcross), and Chris Manns (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) and defensive ends David Mann (Lithonia, Ga./Lithonia), Michael Rose (Simpsonville, S.C./Hhillcrest), Shilque Calhoun (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North), Branden Jackson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport), Diamonte Bailey (Hermitage, Va./Hermitage), and Ira McCune (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove). Right now it appears that O'Brien and his staff are in good shape with Rose, McCune, Bradley and Manns.

There are several linebackers that they find themselves in the mix for like Anthony Harrell (Tampa, Fla./Freedom), Brandon Pittman (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road), Montese Overton (Greenville, N.C./South Central) and Terrance Plummer (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park). NC State would love to get in the hunt with in-state star Stephone Anthony (Wadesboro, N.C./Anson Senior), but it's likely he leaves this state at this point.

Look for names to emerge in the secondary as well. Meanwhile, there are several prospects considered athletes that could end up on either side of the ball that have a high interest in NC State in Frankie Williams (Tampa, Fla./Robinson) and Shamier Jeffery (St. Mathews, S.C./Calhoun County). They also would love to land Lafonte Thourogood (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes).

On the other side of the ball, NC State would love to get another signal caller, but he must be the right fit. The Wolfpack like Ameer Abdullah (Homewood, Ala./Homewood) and he could also play cornerback. The Wolfpack also look good for wide receiver Stanton Seckinger (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Guard) and tight end Drew Owens (Charlotte, N.C./Andrey Kell). Across the offensive front, Darrell Williams (Orlando, Fla./Maynard Evans), Bennie Browne (Cincinnati, Ohio, Walnut Hills), LaMont Hardy (Lovejoy, Ga./Lovejoy) and Stephen Grommer (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) are all good possibilities.

Bottom line
A stable coaching environment and a great eye for talent are two big reasons why O'Brien has won as a head coach. While other coaches and other programs have garnered more recruiting attention, he has quietly chugged along, gone about his business and won a bunch of football games. He will likely do it once again, it's just a matter of when at NC State."

Rivals.com does not even list NC State as in interest for Jadeavon Clowney. Pretty safe to assume he's not a likely prospect.

i feel like im living in some kind of parallel space time... UNC-CH is getting sodomized by the NCAA and the Press and ESPN is writing unsolicited puff pieces about our coach who hasn't lived up to billing yet, but, but who is touted as "just wait, it will come".

Burris is having a killer year for the Caps, 5 receptions for 72 yards and a TD last night as well as an interception.

I saw that too. I was wondering why high schools played last night (Thursday). I guess they bumped up local games one day in anticipation of Earl?

Pittman commits!

http://ncstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1121548

Quote :
"NC State landed verbal commitment No. 7 when linebacker Brandon Pittman from Leesville Road High in Raleigh, N.C., picked the Pack over offers from East Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest during a press conference Friday afternoon at his high school.

Pittman, 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.54 seconds at the Shrine Bowl combine held at South Central High School in Winterville, N.C., last spring. He also did the shuttle in 4.58 seconds and had a 32.7-inch vertical leap. He did 15 reps on the bench press at 185 pounds.

Pittman made 89 tackles as a junior, including 75 solo hits and a sack, and also picked off two passes and recovered two more. He caught three passes for 45 yards, including a touchdown.

His decision to commit to NC State comes as little surprise. He told The Wolfpacker last Friday that he was favoring NC State, and sources tell the The Wolfpacker that Pittman informed State of his decision earlier this week.

Leesville Road has been kind to NC State in recent years. Starting fullback Taylor Gentry, a junior, played at Leesville Road, and offensive coordinator Dana Bible's son Logan is a former quarterback for the team.

Pittman joins punter Wil Baumann from Hoggard High in Wilmington, N.C., defensive back Juston Burris from Broughton High in Raleigh, N.C., running back Anthony Knight from Lawrence Academy in Groton, Mass., athlete Maurice Morgan from North Lenoir High in LaGrange, N.C., quarterback Brian Taylor from Harnett Central High in Angier, N.C., and long snapper Scott Thompson from Trabuco Hills High in Mission Viejo, Cal., in the Wolfpack's recruiting class.

The Wolfpacker's Jacey Zembal was at Friday's announcement and will have more, including video of Pittman's announcement, later."
