i don't know the situation where you live, but when our dog up and vanished when we let her out in the snow she didn't see a barbed wire fence b/c it was buried so she got stuck. may be worth checking some places around the house he could get hung up on in these kind of conditions.

We have. Even though he sticks to paved surfaces in anything but clear, pretty, dry weather. We explored SO. FAR. out of his normal range

With all this water and ice, my first fear was that he walked on a surface that caved, and he ended up in a body of water.

We've been pretty lucky that he knows his limitations (he's going blind, and he's deaf, and weak) - and that he's such a crotchety old dog, and so a creature of habit and strong preferences.
