interesting story. Lawrence Academy, the school of current commit Anthony Knight was going to play St. George's but St. George phoned in a forfeiture because most of the OL is like 170lbs i guess.

"St. George's surprised by forfeit fallout

By Brandon Hall
The phone calls and interview requests began flooding in Monday morning to Eric Peterson's desk. And as of Friday, the St. George's Prep headmaster was still scratching his head.

"Not in my wildest nightmares -- and I'm still surprised now," Peterson said. "None of us had any notion this would happen, nor can we quite fathom why it's garnered as much attention as it has."

On Oct. 1, Peterson got together with the rest of the administration at the small preparatory school just outside of Newport, R.I., and they collectively decided it would be best to forfeit their Oct. 8 football game against Independent School League powerhouse Lawrence Academy.

Safety was the primary concern in the decision, Peterson said, and the Dragons feel as though they have a good case. After 6-foot-6, 280-pound St. George's sophomore Tyshon Henderson -- a raw project with upside but only four games of experience -- the size disparity drops off dramatically, including starting linemen who weigh in at 170 pounds. On top of that, the Dragons have just 28 healthy bodies -- none of whom are seriously considering any level of football beyond high school.

Lawrence boasts at least three starting offensive linemen over 300 pounds, including 330-pound Boston College commit Max Ricci. The Spartans also feature a backfield that's as talented as any school in the Northeast, led by NC State commit Anthony Knight and Iowa commits Mike Orloff and Marcus Grant.

Dragons head coach and athletic director John Mackay confirmed the forfeit to the Boston Herald on Monday, and with it the floodgates opened. Local news outlets rushed to pick up the story, and by Wednesday little St. George's was on the front page of Yahoo! Sports, most all of the attention turning negative.

"Honestly, I don't really know, it kind of doesn't make sense to me," said Peterson, a former football coach at Deerfield Academy. "At one point, the lead story on Yahoo! is Randy Moss being traded to the Vikings, and then right beneath it is a story about St. George's not playing. It's a regular-season football game between two small New England boarding schools."

Peterson wouldn't deny feelings were hurt by the decision, and took responsibilty for it, but added that the parents were "unanimous" in their support of the decision.

"Like any athlete, we want to compete, like any sane person," Peterson said. "This was going to be complicated. I've gotten a fair amount of blowback. 'Adversity builds character' -- yeah sure, that's true. But this was likely going to be something more than an underdog struggle."

Lawrence Academy coach Mike Taylor said his team was treating the forfeit as a bye week.

"For whatever reason they don't feel comfortable with what they've got," Taylor said, "but that's their business."

Mackay could not be reached for comment.

According to a league source, St. George's administration had been discussing what to do about this game since last spring, when they looked at their roster and saw the heaviest returning starter weighed 200 pounds. St. George's communications director Suzanne McGrady confirmed that, saying that this year's game has been a concern since immediately after the Spartans pounded the Dragons 48-15 last October.

Peterson, again, is shouldering the blame for the timing on the decision.

"I'll take responsibility for that," Peterson said. "While we certainly got it on the table [in the offseason], it never reached the point of resolution. We're getting flak for 'Why now?' and maybe this story doesn't catch flak if it's done before the season. But then you're likely to catch flak for prejudging the situation, judging the situation based on information that's eight or nine months old. Kind of a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation.""

We are gonna be young at WR, our most productive ones so far this season are going to be gone (except TE), hate to have a bunch of freshman out there at WR.

We'll still have Graham, Jay Smith, & Stephen Howard as senior WRs next year, and rsSo Quinton Payton.

And potentially Tobias Palmer, Tony Creecy, and Bryan Underwood.

Bur we definitely need another tall & fast WR or two in '11.

Yeah, but still, we will lack experience....this might be an issue if Wilson comes back as he will miss camp again. This year it did not matter because we have all the seniors and Wilson has played with them for years. Also, they did not exactly set the world on fire when they were freshman. Maybe we will get a couple that have the talent to start right away and be a real threat which is what we will need.

It would be nice to get a WR about as tall as Gannon...

I doubt he leaves the date of Florida though.

agreed, that kid is also pretty big. looks like a college kid already, great hands. looks like he is also fast, great route runner. goes to show that a guy who can run a good route can really fool the cb or safety on him.

he needs to go ahead and commit to us and not put up with that "greyshirt" bullshit that Clemson is offering him. Besides, Clemson already has two WR commits in the c/o '11.

so I was just browsing Scouts website and noticed some guys we have our hooks in that I havent seen mentioned in this thread. Was wondering if any of you guys with more recruiting knowledge than me had any idea where we sit with them. Keep in mind, these are just people I found who have us listed on their interested list - which I know doesnt hold a lot of water around here

Ishaq Williams, 4-star DE from Brooklyn, NY
Mike Rose, 3-star De from Simpsonville, SC
Norkeithus Otis, 4-star DE from Gastonia, NC
Kelvin Benjamin, 4-star WR from Belle Grade, FL
Curtis Grant, 5-star LB from Richmond, Va
Steven Daniels, 4-star LB from Cincinnati, OH
Stephone Anthony, 4-star LB (I think someone mentioned him a couple pages back)
Dondi Kirby, 4-star Safety from Monroeville, Pa

Stephone Anthony has been mentioned quite a bit, Scout actually has him a 5-star, #3 LB in the country, he's the top recruit out of NC. I haven't heard of the others, but I don't follow fb recruiting all that closely.

edit: oy yeah, there was an PP article a week or two ago saying that Anthony "was taking notice" of State's strong start. fwiw.

I think Anthony is a slight lean to UF. He's supposedly went there this past weekend on a 2nd unofficial. He visited us for VT. If we keep winning it will only help of course, but not sure if we get some of these guys. The only LB we lose is Irving. We'd have.

firstteam/secondteam
Manning/Maddox
Lucas/?
Cole/Cureton

Cureton doesn't play that much so i don't know how a 5* dude couldn't come in and immediately get on the 2 deep. So you'd think we could get a decent LB in this class, if not two.

where we're really going to need help is at:

DE and DT but DE especially.

Akinniy, Lemon and Augustin will all be gone.

I think Rieskamp is the only one returning with starting exp, kuhn could, but he's more DT now

He better not go to Clemson over us. Their idiot coaches will waste his talent

Hopefully he sees the success our WRs have been having and knows that he could be the next in line

Cureton is a senior, so he's gone next year. I think we see Manning/Maddox/Cole for a veteran starting lineup.

Lucas will be in the regular rotation. EJ Carter is the Syracuse transfer. Hans Rice and Ryan Cheek will both be redshirt sophomores and should break into the two-deep. Plus Colby Jackson switched to LB and he will be a redshirt junior.

"Carter, listed at 6-foot, 222 pounds on the Syracuse roster last season, started eight games as a true freshman last year at Syracuse and was named to the All-Big East Freshman team. Playing primarily weakside linebacker, he finished the season with 24 tackles, including four for losses and two sacks, and he was particularly strong late in the season.

In his final three games, Carter had 14 tackles. He recorded a tackle for a loss at Louisville among his three tackles Nov. 14, and a week later had three more tackles, including two for losses, against Rutgers. He finished his brief career at Syracuse with a season-high eight tackles at Connecticut Nov. 28."

Carter was just beginning to come into his own at the end of last year year. There was little doubt that had he stayed at Syracuse he would have had a breakout season this year. In his senior season in high school he recorded 125 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. He was definitely overlooked by a lot of people. Besides Syracuse he had only two other offers, Appalachian State and Middle Tennessee State. I am certainly glad to have him and think he'll be very productive for us over the next three years.

^^ I hope Marquise realizes the shitstorm going at UNC and goes somewhere else. Even if he doesn't come here, I want to see UNC's recruiting suffer. At least we've already got Brian Taylor coming.

Since Marquise compares his game to Vince Young, I'm not sure how he would do in a Rich Rodriguez offense, Pat White/Denard Robinson style.

Looks like he is headed up to Va Tech this weekend for an official visit.

so how good does our season need to be before we start getting real attention/traction with the top targeted recruits? 8-4? 9-3? Gator Bowl? Beat our key recruiting rivals: UNC, Clemson, & FSU?

Gator bowl is no longer associated with the ACC anymore after the contract ran out last year. They hated "the Maryland rule" and didn't want to keep taking teams like BC that no one wants so they bounced.

[Edited on October 14, 2010 at 10:18 AM. Reason : an ACCCG appearance would help recruiting immensely though]

The gist of the Anthony news is that the Clemson Rivals page reported a top 3 of: VT, State, Clemson. (in that order)
Then the PP article came out saying he was down to a top 6: Florida, VT, Clemsom, Georgia, State, UNC. (in no particular order)

He'll announce in January, so we just gotta keep winning.

Well, we just need to win out, beat VT in the ACCCG, and hope we face Florida in the Orange Bowl(I don't even know if this is possible with the current bowl tie ins/set up) and beat them too. We will then have a victory over all of the other teams in that Top 6 except for Georgia, of course.

Dont know about you guys but this is news to me, i didn't think we had a chance with Travis Hughes.

Quote :
"Hughes has two officials left
By Eric Guimaraes
LB Travis Hughes (6-1 228) of Virginia Beach, VA has already taken official visits to Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech and has two more visits to go. He will be at NC State on October 29th and then heads to Clemson the following weekend. He says these are the five schools that he is considering the most but he will take his time in making a final decision. He says Clemson has a good shot with him. "They are strong, very strong with me," said Hughes. His most recent visit was to North Carolina and he says he enjoyed his time there. "I got to talk with Coach (Butch) Davis and hang out with the players," he said. Hughes will take some unoffiicial visits following his next two offcial visits and does not have a timeframe for a commitment. He did not name a leader."

yea...there's some indication that we're getting back into the picture with some guys because of how well we're playing, but it hasn't actually paid off yet

w/o the on the field success things would be looking pretty bleak right now. losing mccollum really hurt from a recruiting standpoint (though given what Tenuta has done for us I'd make that trade every time) and if we don't get Stephone Anthony it's likely we'll be shut out of the Top 30 in state prospects
