pezking, nice shots. I can never seem to get my night shots that sharp, even of course with a tripod. Whats shutter speeds and iso on those? what focal length as well?

I'm starting to really want a nicer wide lense for city stuff. My kit 18-55mm is crap. Shots with my 55-200mm VR are noticably sharper and have better contrast. I might also like something a bit wider than 18mm.. hrmmm

Eh -- I just wanted to get the sky in the shots. Wasn't trying to be artistic.

If you have suggestions I'm always open, but pointing and laughing won't help me.

the house is pretty underexposed, maybe try HDR? but not silly HDR.

As I understand it, shooting HDR requires:
1) a tripod (in my trunk in the parking lot and I'm on the 2nd floor)
2) an HDR program
3) Knowledge of how to do HDR
4) Time and planning -- I was shooting these off my balcony as I was trying to fix some scuba gear. Saw the sky, ran inside, grabbed the camera, took some shots before the light was gone.

Even though the apartments in that shot are a good ways away I popped up the on-board flash just to see what would happen. I'll post those results in a moment when another file is done uploading.

The south face of Half Dome and Mt. Starr King at 9000 ft near Orstrander Lake from a backcountry ski trip I took over New Years:

The pictures are ovexposed--this was mostly an excersize in learning how to use GIMP to make a panorama.

Party pics. Finally got around to processing them. My exposure was all over the place due to my unreliable batteries in my flash. I really need to order those eneloops. Nothing but a good magic in processing and noise reduction.

ISO 100, focal length is usually 17mm, exposure times are usually long.

I always try to use ISO 100 if the situation is right, and I'll always sacrifice exposure time (as long as it doesn't go past 5 or 6 minutes.. that seems to be the limit of my random hot pixels) for the ISO and aperture I want to use.

Between my walk around lens and my tripod I spent maybe $625. I live by rock solid tripod settings, mirror lock-up, and long exposures. I'm looking to pick up an even wider lens (11-16mm!) VERY soon, but I think I wash fortunate to choose the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 that stays on my camera. For around $400 new, it is incredibly sharp and produces great color. That Tamron says a lot for itself because I don't even own photoshop or anything like that, so generally its a what-you-see-is-what-you-get situation, and I just apply white balance and minor sharpness and contrast with the canon software.

Hey, at least when Kiwi posts new pics she's admitting up front to the cheesy gimmicks that we've been calling her out on for about the last 20 pages. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him (or her) drink.

She clearly understands it better than any of us do. I mean, she's shot weddings and sold a print, how are any of us supposed to know more than her?

I mean, none of us have had photos make finals in a national competition, or had photos published in the Washington Post, or have taught courses at conventions across the country, or have had photography articles published in journalism education magazines, or have any amount of professional experience.

She clearly doesn't want or need the help, so maybe we should just let her continue to produce amazing works.
