Ok I just got back from work to see the score in the 93rd minute. Wooooo!

Also, Dempsey should not be taking penalties with Donovan on the field.

The first pot is seeded with the host nation and then the best 7 countries, but we're not going to sniff that pot. Teams from CONCACAF and Asia will likely be in the same pot for the World Cup draw.

So other than team cohesion and bragging rights, we have nothing to worry play for in the remainder of WCQ?

Right. Since we're 19th in the FIFA rankings, we'd need teams ahead of us to die to give us a chance at Pot 1 for the World Cup. The last WC was the first one where Pot 1 was just the host and then the top 7 countries in the rankings. Usually the previous WC winner is in the first pot and some other criteria that FIFA comes up with.

you want to be ranked as high as possible for whatever the seeding procedure is.

With 2 games left we will be ranked around 13-15 since we just beat 2 top 20 teams.

There is an outside shot we make the top 8 if we get a lot of help.

Beating costa rica would have probably put us in the top 10 and we would have been in good shape to lead a group. that game pretty much killed that.

[Edited on September 10, 2013 at 11:27 PM. Reason : you can calculate the points and we have more than england when the next rankings come out]

[Edited on September 10, 2013 at 11:28 PM. Reason : its really cool how fast you move up on a winning streak because everyone is always losing]

I love Johnson on set pieces. What a great weapon to have to bring in when in need of a goal. Its a shame he can't be on the field at the same time as Altidore. That's a pretty formidable scoring punch.

Dos A Cero: How Columbus Became Home To A Great U.S. Soccer Tradition
Quote :
"How did Columbus become the U.S.'s favorite stomping ground? To put it crudely: it doesn't have a lot of Mexicans.

Tired of matches in Southern California and Florida and the East Coast looking and sounding like a home game for El Tri, then-coach Bruce Arena pushed U.S. Soccer to find a venue that would provide a solid American crowd and cold temperatures. Crew Stadium, the first soccer-specific stadium in the country, fit the bill, offering below-freezing temperatures at kickoff for the World Cup qualifier in February 2001. Josh Wolff was the hero that day, scoring once and assisting on Earnie Stewart's tap-in. Dos a cero was born."

Rewatching the game since I missed most of it last night. Jones played SOOOO much better. Beckerman is pretty meh, Dempsey is invisible, and the defense gives the ball away way too much. But I think Jones played extremely well, so far anyway.

the rankings matter tremendously if we can manage to work our way up to a seed before the draw.it's unlikely, but definitely possible if some other teams have losses and we finish strong.

just because the rankings are stupid doesn't mean they aren't important.

I think one of the best parts about Columbus was when Tab Ramos walked back to the locker room post game in front of us and some dudes right behind me start chanting his name. He looks up in our vicinity and I throw up the Wolfpack sign and he does it back.

Funny how everyone complains about a subjective ranking system like college football but then when you have a completely objective ranking system like fifa, nobody takes it seriously because it is different than the popular subjective rankings of the teams.

That's not really why a lot of people don't like it. Also, anyone can use the calculator on the website to fairly accurately predict where we'll end up I hate the subjective ranking of teams plenty though.

I don't worry too much about the FIFA rankings, but I'm not going to complain about how we have risen with our performance this year

Bradley's Egypt draws Ghana in the African qualifying playoffs. WHOOPS.

Would be nice for us to be guaranteed to not be eliminated by Ghana for the third time in a row so let's hope the Pharaohs get the job done.

Jermaine Jones is an effing cry baby. He reminds me of Cristiano Ronaldo when he plays and that pisses me off. There should be no men with vaginas allowed on the United States men's national soccer team.

^^ All right I'm gone.

I just feel like every time the kid falls down he cries and THAT's what reminds me if C. Ronaldo. Don't try to get a free kick, just play the game.

http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/09/22/jurgen-klinsmann-usmnt-making-progress-have-be-realistic-about-2014-world-cu

i don't feel comfortable about a coach saying his team can't win.

i understand realism but maybe its just an americna cultural thing to think you're going to win until the moment you've lost. even when common sense says you have no chance.

Imagine if a basketball coach at a top 15 program came in march and said WE WILL NOT WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

seems pretty fucked up to me but maybe that is normal in european soccer culture?

[Edited on September 26, 2013 at 12:43 AM. Reason : do teams typically go into tournaments not expecting to win?]

^^I don't necessarily disagree with your statement, but World Cup soccer isn't like NCAA hoops or other sports where on a given day either team has a chance to win. Just look at the countries that have won the tournament, there are only eight total teams with 3 South Americans for 9 wins and 5 Europeans for 10 wins. The US hasn't finished top four in over eighty years. The writing is kind of on the wall and advancement out of the group stage is the number one goal at this point.

If Klinsmann said they were going to win the World Cup, he would get slaughtered by you, by the media, by every other country in the world for blowing smoke everybody's ass. "OH YEAH LIKE WE CAN WIN THE WORLD CUP! WE CAN'T EVEN BEAT COSTA RICA! EDDIE JOHNSON IS OUR BEST PLAYER!"

We get knocked out in the round of 16 next summer and everybody laughs at him. The few people that actually took him seriously on his comments would cry that he was an emperor with no clothes and the team was better under Bob Bradley.

He was directly asked a question so it's not something he just offered up on his own. He's being honest, he's lowering expectations for anybody that legit thinks we have a shot at winning a World Cup.
