Well not Toms that could possibly be him, but the Lost writers are fond of reusing names (not sure if there is any significance). The high school sweetheart that Kate got killed was named Tom. And when Christian Shepard made up a fake name to tell Ana Lucia he called himself Tom.

also as far as the POLAR BEARS are concerned:

if you look at the map that was on the back of the blast door you'll see that there was a hatch for behavior modification in Polar Bears, so the polar bears were already on the island

In the official Lost podcast last week, Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof said that the Hanso Foundation is a real company in Sweden that they thought sounded cool and wrote into the plot. Next thing you know, the Hanso Foundation is getting lots of phone calls and emails from fans, and they're pretty upset at the producers for bringing their name into this whole mess. Cuse and Lindelof sounded serious when they were talking about it, but I really have no idea what's going on.
That dude on Jimmy Kimmel last night looked like he was just a bad actor reading a script that the Lost guys wrote. They were talking about the site getting hacked by "Persephone" (if you are following that little online nerdventure, that name should be familiar) (and it's the name of Desmond's girlfriend, of course) which just about confirmed it's part of the Lost plot and completely fictional. [edit: Desmond's girl is Penelope, not Persephone, which means nothing is confirmed...] (But they sounded so convincing on the podcast!)

The Hanso thing is of course staged by writers of Lost. Of course the Jimmy Kimmel show is going to play along, they're on ABC. Just like Hyperion books (which is owned by Disney, who also owns ABC) is playing along with the Bad Twin novel shown on the show... acting like the writer is a real person. The foreward even talks about Cindy, the stewardess he fell in love with in australia and dedicated the book to (she's the one that disappeared when the Tailenders were trying to make their way back to join the rest of the group).
