Teams in all caps are assumed automatic bids

The autobids arent based on his opinion. He gives it to the team with the best record and in case of a tie the team with the best rpi, hence miami

Because no one reads the last post:

Quote :
"Here's the main point that I feel that all of you posting about this rating and that ranking are missing.

How previous games have gone in no way determines how we're going to play the next one.

A coin comes up heads 10 times in a row, there is still only a 50% chance you can get heads again.

Clearly our chances of winning most games should be better than 50/50 since we have a good team, but you folks have full out arguments just because some person who has 0 effect on the outcome of the game says we are better or worse than others.

Who cares? Just watch the games and be excited for the W."

Oh well that makes sense. So better to go by his seeds for who he actually assumes is gonna win the conference.

We've all seen good NC State teams lose to scrubs and awful NC State teams take down top-5's.

Sure a higher rating gives fans more reason to be optimistic but just because an analyst says "THIS IS HOW IT IS!" doesn't mean it actually is.

I'm just sick of everyone arguing over "OMG THIS IS WHAT THIS ONE GUY SAYS WHICH IS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT THAT OTHER GUY SAID!"

That's what sports talk forums are for. Chances are we are all gonna be wrong on whatever we say but the speculation is what makes it fun.

I think this team is going to surprise us. The only screw up so far this year was OkSt. Not going to count barely losing to Michigan @ Michigan. Everything seems to be on the up with this team, and I think they are going to crush Maryland.

he also has us potentially playing kansas in the sweet 16 in kansas city.

that'd be a bit of a bummer of a draw.

We probably match up better against Kansas this year than we did last year. They still have that Withey goof but they lack a big athletic forward ala Thomas Robinson like last year. We should be able to dominate them inside.

How about we keep winning and get back to #6. I MEAN DAMN!!!!! Start off over hyped. Get knocked in the teeth and come back. I'd like to stay top 15 the rest of the year and not sweat at tourney time. Staying top 15 is a 4 and MAYBE a 5 seed. want to stay away from a 5 seed. I think we can keep winning and get up to the 3 seed. yeahhhh

Playing Clemson and Wake twice should really help our defensive rating. Also, I saw that Colorado State passed us last night after their recent loss.

^^^ Playing Maryland should help our defensive stats. Pe'shon and Faust are atrocious. Len will get his points, but the rest of that team is horrid.

So this is a pretty stupid article in the Technician about which highlight/entrance video we should use.

http://www.technicianonline.com/sports/article_f782aed8-5f9c-11e2-aa46-001a4bcf6878.html

But I lol'd at this line:

Quote :
"The only benefits of this newer video are the inclusion of freshman guard Rodney Purvis and freshman forward T.J. Warren in the highlight reels and the additional footage of other game-related celebrations such as the iconic “Wolfpack in the house” yell, the team in transit between the locker room and the court, fans celebrating in the seats and the cheerleaders entering the court with their flags flying high."

^Couldn't agree more. The "our state" video is fine and gets people loud. Aside from the national anthem, the time while "boom" was being played on Saturday was the quietest time in the arena from 10:30 am - 2:30 pm. And it's waaaaaay too long.

I still vote for Volbeat's Warrior.

This goes back to my point about caring too much about ratings. If we play weak teams then yeah it makes our stats look better but it won't mean we'll be any better against top teams in the tournament.

Why would playing weak teams make our stats look better?

You realize the people who design these things are like geniuses, right? Like PHD level mathematicians. You think they think every team is the same strength???

Is that not what "playing Clemson and Wake" means?

I guess not. I just don't give any buy-in to what the math says about how well we're expected to perform. All I care is that when the team does go out to play, they win.

well, one thing you (and a lot of people) don't get is that you can get a lot of valuable (if you care about the team, i guess) information about how the team is currently playing without so much as looking at the predictions.

another thing that you don't get is that any decent system takes opponent strength into account.

I agree that you can get a lot of valuable information from the ranking systems. My only point was that face was being silly regurgitating stats, then using those stats to claim that we're probably gonna lose around 7 conference games, then days later talking about us going undefeated, and other such nonsense. That was my only point.

look, I'm no fan of only looking at a select few stats and then treating them as absolute fact like he does, but those projections are fluid and shit like that happens as more and more games are played and more data is entered

And if Nate Silver was wrong about Obama, he'd still look like a jackass, even though his model showed the possibility of Romney winning.

I think that's kinda the point. Data is all well and good but the moment you start making predictions, you're making extrapolations that may or may not be better informed than "gut feelings" depending on the outcome. Especially in a question as unpredictable as "will X sports team win or lose a single game."

it matters b/c you came in here saying stats are stupid and then demonstrated that you have no clue what you're looking at.

like jesus, i'm no master in advanced sports analytics, but the way some people reject numbers is just ignorant.

NO. You guys memory is so selective that I'm hesitant to give you the benefit of the doubt on even being intelligent.

For the record i predicted 12-6 and i even said we had a chance to do better than that.

I said 100 times early on that I thought we were better than our preseason projection and that our early season struggles were a fluke.

Then when our level of play started dropping severely the last few weeks I pointed out there are a lot of things to be nervous about because we had started to play really poorly.

I never said shit about us going undefeated, I was making fun of the people here who think because we beat Duke we are going undefeated.

I was the one who said over and over again we would be slight underdogs vs Maryland and you guys were the ones who dismissed that and said I was an idiot. Well, you were wrong.

^^ No. I did not. I said something snarky like "OMG WE ARE ON PACE TO GO UNDEFEATED".

This is what I hate about this website. You all just make up random shit constantly and no one can hold an intelligent discussion. Bunch of kids.

No our preseason projection was like #30 or so... i dont recall the exact number but it was around there.

No I haven't been. 12-6 still looks like a fairly accurate prediction. Though I'd probably rather be sitting on 13-5 since we stole the Duke game and the conference is slightly weaker than I thought 2-3 weeks ago.
