I mean you wonder why people think we're a bunch of crazy paranoid lunatics when this sort of shit happens to us all the time. It's completely rational behavior when this is what you have to deal with.

Hell this is a rebuilding year, I'd start Beverly every game, take the "forfeits" and get a ton of press coverage for it.

oh absolutely. the "they get paid in the form of a scholarship" argument has always been bullshit, but if this doesn't further shine on a light on what the value (or lack of) of that education/scholarship is then nothing will

from the report:

Quote :
"The panel noted that its ability to determine whether academic fraud occurred at UNC was limited by the NCAA principle relying on individual member schools to determine whether academic fraud occurred on their own campuses. North Carolina said the work was assigned, completed, turned in and graded, often by the former secretary, under the professor’s guidelines. While the university admitted the courses failed to meet its own expectations and standards, the university maintained that the courses did not violate its policies at the time."

The Carolina Way: Comply with the letter of the policies, ignore the actual standards those policies are trying to achieve.

This has been a fun ride but if you are going to throw out a twist ending like that at least go big. Like Mark Emmert has been Roy Williams all along. Or Nike just outright buying the NCAA.

^^^ I'm writing the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation. That's who had the hearing on the NCAA with Emmert 3 years ago. That's going to be NCAA-focused and also bring in the Louisville et al scandal.

Current committee head is John Thune, and reading his opening testimony now all concerns he had have just gotten worse over the past 3 years.

I'm still gobsmacked they didn't at least give the program probation. That would have at least covered the NCAA's ass. Now they are getting rightfully dragged for doing nothing.

I honestly don't understand this. How can the NCAA say they have no grounds for punishment?

Not to make light of the victims and horrible abuse that took place at Penn State, but the NCAA had no grounds for punishment there either! And yet, umm, they sure as fuck laid down the hammer in State College .

^Unfortunately they also got sued and had to deal with a lot of headaches for that. The big problem is the bylaws are apparently toothless and written around self reporting and evaluation.

Basically if there isn't a payout involved, if you say you didn't do something they can't really hold you accountable for it (at least that's how this case is being portrayed)

Keep em broke is the only real prerogative.

So, when can we expect the lawsuits from all the schools in the past 20 years who have been hit with an academic charge by the NCAA?

Also, when the hell do we start our fake classes?

This is the most infuriating part to me. It's not so much that they got off, or that they got off on a technicality, but that they looked everybody in the face and said this was legit and there was nothing anyone could/would do about it.

Well, at least it's not just us melting down. From the Kentucky messageboards:

Quote :
"We should flood the Capiluto and Barnhart with letters, emails, etc. requesting that UK no longer play North Carolina in any intercollegiate sport, or work with them in any academic research of any kind. The power 5 presidents and athletic directors and coaches are just like all the people in hollywood not saying a damn thing about Harvey Weinstein. They all know that the arrogant sobs are the biggest cheaters of all time, an yet they are walking. I graduated from UK. I have followed UK athletics for over 50 years. It has been a passion and hobby in my life. I have listened to their arrogance and demeaning of my school, and my state, and my basketball program as backwater and cheaters…any now they are exposed and walk? October 13, 2017 is the day college athletics died. I will have a lot of free time on my hands to do something that matters."

Also from their thread about Beverly:

Quote :
"This. Don't piss off NC State. They will win."

Wasn't there a group of professors at UNC that kept releasing statements basically expressing how upset they were that academic reputation had taken a backseat to athletics. Seems like it was around the time people were getting fired?

Where are they now?

UNC to NCAA - Hey this report that we made to SACS is wrong and bad and there are typos so you can't use it to punish us because we say it's not good.

^ From the Washington Post column:

Quote :
"The NCAA's ruling on Beverly is even more puzzling when you dig down into its transfer rules, which at first glance appear contradictory. While one rule states that a player is considered a transfer if he or she 'attended a class or classes in any quarter or semester in which the student was enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies,' another rule — 14.5.3.1 — says a student-athlete isn’t considered a transfer if he or she 'has been enrolled in or attended classes only in a summer school,' which would seem to be the case here. "

If that's true, then we should have a fairly strong appeal case, right?

Yea I don't think they will either, but it seems like they got played pretty badly. I get the feeling SACs thought it was an athletics issue and that if UNC admitted to what they had already admitted to SACs, the NCAA would be able to come down pretty hard on UNC. That theoretical punishment from the NCAA would hurt far more than what an accreditation agency issues.

But nah, UNC just denied what they previously admitted to SACs (or half denied).

Unless SACs wants to see every other university emulating UNC, they better sack up!

This is possibly the death-knell of the NCAA's relevance. Every school just saw that the NCAA will back down if you fight back. We'll begin to see conferences completely breaking away, and they'll just form into minor league type organizations, eventually removing all connections to the universities.

I don't know why anyone is surprised by this. It's not the NCAA's job to make sure that a University is, in fact, a University.

Quote :
"That's it.

College sports need to disappear. Fuck paying the players, just get rid of it entirely. Let the NBA and NFL pay for their own minor leagues."

Dude. Honestly? Yes! And while we're at it, create lower divisions and implement promotion/relegation!

Also, don't worry guys. The NCAA is going to put Condoleezza Rice in charge of the Commission of College Basketball to implement serious reform. And as we all know, she's never one to make horrible decisions when under pressure from powerful interests. I'm sure she'll gather all the evidence, carefully examine all the details, and then decide to reform college athletics invade Iraq.

^^ I agree. Fuck college sports. I just cancelled my TV sports package and won't be watching or attending any more NCAA events. Their mission is supposedly to provide educational opportunities to athletes, and they don't care about the biggest case of institutionally-sponsored academic fraud in history. Fuck em.
