I am sure there's a good way to make numbers noticable and at the same time not clutter the screen. I just think all those "^" or "^^^" references are pretty confusing. It's much easier to refer to a message with a particular number.

^I agree with you. The number of carets (thanks frosh, I would have written the incorrect one) tells you how many replies up to read. It's not so confusing when they mess it up, just a bit annoying.
