so, the 8 o'clock hour just rolled around. everything that has been posted in since 8 is "new" everything that hasn't,even if it was posted in like 10 min's ago is "old". does everything turn "old" every time the hour rolls around? 11/8/2001 8:09:54 PM |

no, everytime you close out the window it should be old. whats the is what has been posted since you were on TWW past. if it hasnt been long at all, there wont be many new. 11/8/2001 8:19:45 PM |

mm - actually i think that "old" and "new" are server-based. I don't think they have anything to do with how long it's been since YOU looked at the threads, but how long since SOMEONE has posted on them. 11/8/2001 8:20:57 PM |

What dirtygreek said is what i was told before and closing the window and opening it has never had anything to do w/ it before. I just noticed the stuff i said at the top. look at the old ones and their "last posted times" vs. the new ones. you'll see it. 11/8/2001 8:22:48 PM |

yeah, i'm not sure of the pattern myself, as i'm still trying to figure it out, but it seems odd, because some threads that have been posted in just a few minutes from the present will sometimes get changed to old 11/8/2001 8:24:05 PM |

actually it really seems random, because i posted something when the lounge had all new threads, i went back and all were old but 2. ive been in my room and have had all old threads when my roommate has had mostly new ones, doesnt make any sense..........hm, maybe i get on here to much. 11/8/2001 8:24:07 PM |

it isnt this way, but it SHOULD be new until you look at it once. Maybe some other things in the equation like how many posts have been made in it since you saw it last. It could be stored as a huge cookie on your computer, which ones you have looked at. There are about 26000 topics now. A 2 byte number for how many replies it had when you saw it last would make a 52k cookie. Add a boolean for if you have seen it (about 3k) and its 55k. Of course you wouldnt need to include anything older than 90 days, so the size goes down to about 5-10k.

insane man, I understood the terms there, but the concept went right by me. 11/8/2001 8:30:29 PM |

the concept is that a topic is old and new differently to each person based on if they have seen it or not, and if it has been replied to like 10 times after it was previously old it becomes new again. The number 10 could be user selectable. 100 might be better.

I generally try to stay out of these personal arguements, but ive just gotta stick up for InsaneMan on this. He seems to know what he's talking about, certainly more than me about this. I understand the concept he outlined and it sounds reasonable enough.
So Yost- kindly fuck off 11/8/2001 8:38:29 PM |

Its just one cookie - that tells when you were last logged in. When you request the page, the server requests the lastlogin cookie and compares the last modified time on the topic to the lastlogin value. If it was modified after you last logged in then its new, if after then its old. 11/8/2001 10:14:59 PM |
