burton's made the ending different from the book

We finished assembling the film at the IMAX last night and after two technical screening I have to say it is a lot better than what I thought it would be. The Oompa Loompas (actually played by only one guy) and their songs are hilarious.

any movie involving tim burton, johnny depp and danny elfaman is more than likely going to be really good.

has johnny depp ever been in a bad movie?

ninth gate was just weird. secret window was bad despite depp. i dont know that i've ever disliked him in a movie, just the movie itself.

^^^i have a feeling i might've liked the oompa loompas a lot better if i could've understood what they were saying.

I can't put my finger on why, but I liked Ninth Gate. It somehow reminded me of "Eyes Wide Shut", which I also liked.

I liked the Ninth Gate's idea of piecing together riddles hidden in 3 books-- fun mystery to watch!

Can't wait to see Tim Burton's twist on this story. I hope Willy Wonka has flashbacks to a dark and troubled childhood ( a Tim Burton trademark)

Ninth Gate pissed off my inner librarian because no real archivist would ever handle a book like that while SMOKING. God. I need therapy for getting annoyed at this stupid shit.

DeppasWonka's hair looks STUPID. I'm sure he's a nice person on the inside though.

Someone who messes around in archives. Like, of Old Books. And it was Depp smoking all over. ;p

Haha, I know what an archivist is. And yes, I distinctly remember Depp smoking all over the place too. I can see why it bothers you but then again that never bothered me. I think it goes along with his character. Priests arent supposed to lie and sodomize little boys but there are some that do anyway. So Depp is one of the "smoking archivists"

Yeah Depp was supposed to be sleazy in that movie anyway-- like when he ripped off that couple and ran off with the the Don Quixote collection, or when his friend at the bookstore was murdered and hung upside down on the staircase, he didn't seem to care that much.

What I didn't get was why that one guy kept his collection of priceless books on a wide open floor of some room in his mansion-- maybe he JUST got done cleaning them and left them there?

"10. Roald Dahl hated the movie. There is actually some doubt as to whether he actually wrote the screenplay. Either he was taking his time or didn't please the the producers so another "ghost" screenwriter filled in the details including numerous literary references. This information was all found in Jeremy Treglown's book, Roald Dahl : A Biography. Dahl's script was almost identical to the book so alot of it was thrown out and the script was rewritten (without credit) by David Seltzer. David Seltzer went on to write many great films including "The Omen." Update 11-26-99: I've found out that David Seltzer only added/rewrote to about 30% - 40% of the script. The rest was all Dahl's work."

"Let me dispense with the obvious comparison immediately: this version is more faithful and substantive than Mel Stuart's foppish 1971 production, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Somehow - probably because many of my generation saw this year-after-year on television during our youths - that overrated motion picture has become a classic. Dahl hated it, and it's no wonder why: the edgy became genial, Willy Wonky was transformed into a father figure, and the Oompa Loompas sang lame songs (okay, so one or two of those tunes are catchy). In making this movie, Burton shoulders aside Stuart's film and returns to the source material. The result is faithful enough to have earned the Dahl family's seal of approval"

Saw this at 5:15 @ Raleigh Grande, wonderful movie.

Strange and tastefully done. I loved it. My favorite line that had me rolling but no one else found it funny:

"Really, stop mumbling, it's really bumming me out" (or something close)...hilarious

saw it last night and i thought it was awesome. Tim Burton did an EXTRAORDINARY job visually. i was impressed the whole movie with that. moreso than almost any other thing hes done. danny elfman delivers yet again. and johnn depp(tho there were a handful of times i thought he wasnt at his best) was 100x better than the trailers made him out to be as willy wonka. loved it

i enjoyed the movie [i havent seen the original in a long while so i cant make an accurate comparison but i wanna say this one is better]

depp really made me LOL a lot and he was really weird but i liked it

"good morning, sunshine"

"really you should stop mumbling b/c i cant hear a word you are saying"

AND if you hate his hair, well then, charlie makes fun of it in the movie for sec too

****

am i the only one who is really impressed w/ depp and his acting? i mean he can play these weird guys like jack sparrow and wonka but then he can be really serious too

I thought it was good despite a few glaring problems, mainly the sloppy CGI. I didn't like some other things, but all in all it was an enjoyable movie.

Out of all the times I've seen it so far I've only noticed one major error, towards the end when Wonka's getting his shoes shined by Charlie you can see a cameraman in Depp's sunglasses when he glances to his right (the viewer's left, and you probably would only see it in the IMAX version). Other than that one tiny mistake I still love this movie, and I seriously want an Oompa Loompa, I think Deep Roy did a great job (he was also in Star Wars VI, Planet of the Apes, and Big Fish).

^ It's important to note that the new songs all feature Dahl's original lyrics on top of Elfman compositions. I didn't much care for them except for the Veruca/squirrel room song which was excellent.

and what happened to the golden eggs??

I noticed during the credits that the lyrics were written by Dahl but
the originals are still much better

Why havent they made a BFG or james and the giant peach movie yet?
