Beta testing is over and the game is awsome. But 15 bucks a month +retail software price seems a lil steep for a game. Anyone here planning on playing? or is it just way too much money? 11/19/2004 1:52:24 PM |

I guarantee you that there's way more than $15 a month in your budget that you're really wasting on things nowhere near as fulfilling as a good MMORPG can be. 11/19/2004 1:53:27 PM |

The game experience is unlike anything you find in a single player game or standard multiplayer games. I think its well worth the fee. Besides, if i stay at home just one night and play WoW instead of going to a bar, its already paid for itself. 11/19/2004 1:54:02 PM |

I'd challenge you to find one.
theres not much one can do with 350 a month after bills, food and gas.

If you can't afford $15 a month on entertainment, you have no business owning a computer in the first place. 11/19/2004 2:00:07 PM |

Easy there dude. Im certainly no rich kid, and i have a pretty tight budget. But $15 for pretty equates to one night out drinking (usually i spend more).
SO again, if i even stay home one night, its already paid for itself. 11/19/2004 2:00:19 PM |

Well, seeing as schoolwork and work has to be done, a computer was a pretty logical buy.
I don't go out to the bars, and cook all of my meals at home.
I could easily budget the 50 for retail, and maybe even 5 a month. But i dont even pay 15 a month for highspeed internet.
It would cost 200 for the first year to play this game. Thats almost a full months rent11/19/2004 2:08:06 PM |

yeah everyone does throw 15 bucks away a month, but on a college budget, i'd rather spend that money on something that i use more than 4 hours a week, and can get something beneficial out of it.
I guess i'm the only one that feels that paying retail price and then having to paying 150 a year is a bit absurd for a video game. 11/19/2004 2:20:40 PM |

Computer labs. You're paying for them anyway.
Anyway, you're not paying that much a year for the game. The game is merely the frontend for a larger service. What you're paying for is continued development of new content and the maintenance of a vast community of players. MMORPGS are experiences, hobbies, not just games.11/19/2004 2:52:43 PM |

Even though I am addicted to FFXI, I am going to get WoW since it claims to not take up too much of your time. For those times, like last night, when I had two hours left that I could play when my party broke so I was stuck with not much to do for two hours except twiddle my thumbs. There wasn't enough time to get a party together or wait to get into one, and my decent farming spot was over camped. So it is times like those when WoW will be a nice change. 11/19/2004 5:19:34 PM |

If $15 a month is too much for you, but you're willing to pay retail...then go Guild Wars. I don't know when it comes out, but it's virtually an MMO and has no monthly fee. I played the 5 day trial thing awhile back and it's pretty sweet. 11/19/2004 11:30:21 PM |

I'll be making "the official" W.O.W. thread on Tuesday, the same day as the release, that way we can all join the same (Normal) server and make an NCSU guild.

McDanger All American 18835 Posts user info edit post |
I'm already making a guild for a PVP server that I have a few people interested in... there are so many options in this game that it'll be impossible to make a purely NCSU guild (some people will want to play horde, some alliance... some won't want to be on PVP servers, etc). 11/20/2004 1:51:39 PM |
Stimwalt All American 15292 Posts user info edit post |
It is possible, you just have to want to join.
For the normal server, it makes no difference b/c you can be both horde AND alliance.
For the PVP server, HORDE is the way to go anyway, since every ten-year old on the east coast will want to make a gnomish mage.
We'll have to show them whose boss, undead mages :] 11/20/2004 2:27:55 PM |

I very much want to play that game... but I have a laptop with a pretty crappy video card... it did run the open beta, just not pretty. Occasional lag issues, but nothing that ever got me killed. Buuut... I don't think I can convince myself it's worth all that money. I don't like the pay per month scheme... I fear it'll go something like "man, I spent all that money on the game this month... I'd better go play it some more so I get my money's worth!" This would probaby have a negative impact on grades.
My goal is to take at least some of the time I would have spent playing WoW and use it to practice karate. That way instead of having a powerful character -- faster, stronger, better 1s and 0s -- I myself can be faster, stronger, better. I hope I can stick with that. 11/20/2004 2:36:40 PM |

^^ Had no idea my poor arm could leave such an impression. It makes some of the karate moves a bit difficult... have to be careful on some of the blocks, but it hasn't gone crazy yet. *knocks on wood*
I enjoyed playing around in the open beta a lot, I started Sunday and got up to a level 16 Tauren Hunter... but I shouldn't have been playing as much as I was. My willpower isn't as strong as it ought to be, and if I don't have the game, I can't lose to the temptation to play the game! I may try and convince a friend to let me mess around in the game occasionally... but I won't be playing it very seriously. Kinda sad... I like cooperative games, and this one seemed pretty good for it. Playing WITH my friends, sharing items, grouping, and so on... instead of a kind of game where we're all trying to kill each other! Of course, they all want to play PvP, and I'd rather not... I dislike being killed and I (generally) don't want to make other people unhappy by killing them... exceptions are made for assholes, though. 11/20/2004 3:55:05 PM |
McDanger All American 18835 Posts user info edit post |
Well if the point of the game is PVP, then it's not ruining their good time by killing them.
Sometimes the best fun I have in a PVP game is when I fight the zerg and get wiped out, laughing the whole time. 11/20/2004 4:09:37 PM |

gosh man i always play PVP and i never get mad..you have the choice to play PVP or not..if you choose to play PVP then obviously you are planning on killing other people and dying yourself some too. Ive never known anyone to get pissed off that someone else killed them in a PVP...thats the fun of it. i think maybe youre confused saltwterkiss.
also i played PVP on open beta and i went around with a group...sharing loot and trading items to each other that each of us needed and we never attacked each other all being orcs and in the same group and stuff..PVP does not mean total chaos 11/20/2004 4:13:22 PM |

*shrug* Perhaps I'm just strange... but I usually format my strategies in games so that I die as few times as possible. In games like Halo, this often means I don't get the most kills -- but I'm happy when I have the fewest deaths, and when my kill/death ratio is very high. I liked CS, the few times I played it, because the lack of respawn encouraged this sort of cautious behavior. I'm cautious in other types of games, too -- I never once died when I played through Fable. The only major exception to this was a character I had on a MUD that constantly used the teleport spell (moved you to a random room). Great for exploring, but I constantly ended up in nasty areas and consequently lost all of my equipment.
It wouldn't so much be me choosing to play PVP -- it would be my friends choosing to play PvP, and me choosing to play with them. I think (if I were playing) that the benefits of playing with my friends would outweigh my dislike for PvP... but I would prefer to be able to play with them and still opt to be a "non-combatant." I won't hurt you, so you can't hurt me... I did try PvP briefly in the beta... it was amusing watching people swarm around in a herd, but it didn't really leave me with any sense of accomplishment. The death system in WoW is nice, pretty forgiving... but still. I just don't like dying. Maybe I'm "too attached to my character", maybe I'm just a wuss... but I would rather stay alive and do something other than try to smash someone else's character. 11/20/2004 5:09:04 PM |

I would have loved to have seen the stats on how many characters of each race there were on the server... I really wondered whether more people were playing alliance or horde.
I didn't get to enough places to see the racial makeup... I was mostly in Mulgore, Durotaur, or The Barrens (with a couple of brief trips to Booty Bay and Ashenvale), so mostly I saw Taurens, Orcs, and Trolls. And a good number of night elf raids with the occasional human/dwarf/gnome. 11/20/2004 9:12:56 PM |

Here is a listing of where a lot of the pvp guilds are going to be playing and what sides: http://www.afraidyet.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1079
Apparently, the East/Central PvP server will be Archimonde and the Pacific/Mountain PvP server will be Blackrock.
My guild (Kali Compton) is going to be playing Alliance on Pacific.
Edit: I also heard that several Wal-Mart's around the country have put it on the shelves early. I was near the one on Glenwood tonight so I checked it out, they didn't have it. You can't play until Tuesday regardless, but they haven't said what time Tuesday that the servers will come up.

I suggest everybody find a central time zone server to play on. During beta, I played both eastern and central time zone servers... the eastern ones were clogged with european players who don't have a server of their own. Ping in this game doesn't matter much at all... and the difference between like a ping of 80ms to the central server over 50ms to the eastern one won't matter at all when the server itself is experiencing processing lag. 11/21/2004 12:09:01 PM |
