whoa, I was just chatting with a friend about this and came here to do a search and see what was suggested and this one was at the top.

So is there any particular brand that I should stay away from in regards to the media? I found some 16x Verbatim media for .37 a disk.

and what's the suggested type now that is playable by most regular DVD players? Do most/all modern DVD players play all the variations? -R, +R, etc?

25 pack of TDK DVD+R or DVD-R for $7.99 at Circuit City

I picked up a spool (DVD+R) last weekend, and they play in everything I've tried.

I'm thinking about getting another spool later on since today is the last day for that special.

^^I'm talking about any disk from that brand - I've just always personally found them to be bottom-of-the-barrel. But if they work fine for you, then stay with 'em.

Intrex locally sells the Ritek brand of media. Last time I bought some, the 50 pack was priced the same or slightly cheaper than Newegg.

i only use Ridata/Ritek dvd-rs. they are less than .40 each and are excellent quality. i once tried some freebies i got with these and the freebies didnt work for crap, so I stick with these. i am sure name brands are ok, but why spend a lot on them. i check pricewatch.com and find the lowest price for these and buy from that place...

The Maxell deal at OfficeDepot was good, too bad it's over now.

I think the best deal now is Verbatim 100-pack 8x DVD+R's at amazon for $59.99 - $30 rebate = $29.99 with free shipping and no tax (this has been the low end of the going rate for this top end media). You can get Verbatim -R's for a bit cheaper, but I prefer the +R's so I can change booktype to DVD-ROM. I've already come across a couple DVD players that won't play anything BUT +R's with the changed bitsetting.

this week Office Depot has:
Maxell DVD Media 50-PKs for $18.99 (at Staples for $17.94)
Philips CD-R 100-PK for $14.99

ends up being the same deal as last week for the Maxell's

that Circuit City deal is a good price-per-disc but a 15pk isn't enough. is there a limit that you can buy? i didn't see one.

never used philips or maxell before but i've have bad experiences with Memorex so i don't bother with those anymore.

I know that the Maxell 8x +R's (made in Japan) are really good (at least for Plextor drives). I would put it right up there with Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. I can't speak for all the other Maxell media, though.

J_Hova...i've burnt about 400 or so dvds and used about every brand and i think i've had 1...yes 1 that messed up. don't be suckered into buying name brands...just go to http://www.supermedia.com and get the cheapest dvd-r or dvd+r...i'm 399/400 and i pay .25 to .37 per dvd...

wait for a good deal to come along and you can get good quality name-brand media for that price. your dvd burner will determine whether that generic cheap shit will actually work. some dvd burners are pretty picky. even if they burn correctly, the cheap ones could give you problems in the future.

Just because that was your experience doesn't mean it'll be EVERYONE else's experience. You can not generalize DVD burning with just one drive and only 400 or so DVD's. I've burnt over 3000 DVD's utilizing about 11 different burners and countless types of media, but I still don't generalize and I know I can't predict the next person's experience.

One thing I do know is that if you can get good media for cheap, there's no reason not to get it. You can usually find 8x Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden or Maxell media for about 25 to 40 cents per disc (sometimes after rebate).
