All goalies wear a cup, some wear two. The important part is that the goalie's cup is WAY bigger than a pansy forward's cup. 5/9/2005 4:25:08 AM

Nah, I'm a mediocre goalie at best, I just went to all the games back then (I couldn't afford Canes season tix and was hurting for some quality hockey).
Two pages would still make me laugh, but it has to be goalie-related to count.

i heard their sticks are expensive as shit...why? I know other sticks are made out of some crazy aloy shit to help them bend but why does a goalie need more than a piece of wood? 5/9/2005 4:42:06 AM
|
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
It's a piece of wood, but it's a big piece of wood that's hand-carved and formed, and it's reinforced with fiberglass and kevlar. With that said, even a completely custom wood goalie stick from a big company (Koho, CCM, Sherwood) runs $65 near the top end of the scale, and as long as you don't abuse it, it'll last a long time, though it will lose its "snap" rather quickly. With that said, you can get a high-quality goal stick for $40 if you know what to buy. 5/9/2005 4:45:08 AM

vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
Goalie fights are awesome. If you're looking for a crazy one, google Cloutier vs. Salo. After beating the crap out of the turtling Swede, Cloutier challenges the whole bench. There are certain goalies whose names I won't mention that have quick release buckles on the punching arm of their chest protector so they can free-up quickly if a fight breaks out. 5/9/2005 4:50:59 AM

you think all this goalie knowledge will help me pass an organic chemistry exam tomorrow? 5/9/2005 4:53:11 AM
|
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
Maybe. Does organic chemistry have any bearing on the stuff that makes my catch glove smell like old socks? 5/9/2005 4:53:48 AM
|
wolfAApack All American 9980 Posts user info edit post |
indeed...your catch glove probably is soaked with sweat, which is full of nitrogen wastes from you blood, and organic waste compounds (like urine) containing nitrogen usually have a strong odor. 5/9/2005 4:56:49 AM
|
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
So it's from the sweat itself, not some bacteria growing in the glove? I'm trying to get rid of the smell somehow, and I figured a bacterial-neutralization product like Nok-Out would work best. Am I wrong? 5/9/2005 4:58:40 AM

its a combo of sweat and mildew which is why it smells like sweaty dog ass 5/9/2005 5:01:42 AM
|
wolfAApack All American 9980 Posts user info edit post |
probably. There might be bacteria growing in it as well, but im not sure. You wouldn't think bacteria could grow in a glove, but I learned in microbiology that some of those little fuckers can grow anywhere. 5/9/2005 5:02:22 AM
|
pinkpanther All American 7465 Posts user info edit post |
are you kidding me those things are probably covered with bacteria
think about it sweaty hockey guy takes off equipment that is wet from sweat + ice then he proceeds to throw it in a large bag and more than likely lets it sit either in his car (ick) or throws it somewhere outside or in his house and doesnt pick it up again until next practice or next game
there is no telling what kind of nasty mess is growing in hockey equipment 5/9/2005 5:06:59 AM

^^yeah but there wouldn't be as much as you might think. They are definately growing on there, but if you think about it, what are they going to grow on besides sweat? That is too salty to support most bacterial growth.
sorry i cant help this B get to 2 pages....peace out

I'm really neurotic (I am a goalie after all), so I air out everything the minute I get home. I have a whole elaborate system of placement for maximum airflow to each piece of equipment. The smell doesn't really bother me, but when everything's sitting out in the spare room some people complain. 5/9/2005 5:23:00 AM

I think it is rediculous that they are discussing potential changes to goalie pads in the CBA "talks". How about we have a freakin' season first!!!
I have been curious how Canadians are handling this. At least here we still have tennis and Indy car racing. (Baseball is boring and Nascar isn't a sport)
Actual goalie related question: It has been my experience as a ref and as a player that goalies tend to be overly sensitive about getting bumped around. I know that getting chopped in the catcher by a stick hurts, but I am talking about after they freeze the puck they want to get up and fight everyone and then whine if they get tapped. Is that something they teach in goalie school? 5/25/2005 5:00:27 AM
|
heebrew123 All American 633 Posts user info edit post |
they are sensitive to be tapped because if you were down in the butterfly and some assclown charges the net at fuckin 10 miles an hour with a stick jabbing at your crotch you dont want to be knocked at a weird angle and have to be bedridden for weeks. Also they get all of the credit when there is a win and get all the blame if there is a loss. You gotta be on the top of your game all the time, the way that the defense plays nowadays one goal games are common in the upper echlon
sidenote: is that khabibulon at the top i cant read the number. (spelling is off)
freaking out that there is no hockey to watch in Tennessee where can i watch please help. 5/25/2005 8:08:51 AM

^^ It depends wholly on the situation. Even a bit of slow contact can be bothersome, as a body hitting the mask at slow speed is actually more uncomfortable than a puck due to the mask's rigid design. Mostly, goalies only get pissed when an opposing player makes contact because he's being lazy. When covering, it's really easy to get skated on or have a player fall on you, so you get a little defensive. Personally, I don't sweat it too much, and I'd say that it has nothing to do with the pressure of the position. Then again, my blocker and stick are in the air if anyone comes close to running me, so there's that.
^ Yes, that's Khabibulin. 5/29/2005 3:02:02 AM
