so i need a laptop. i'd really like to have one that is as good as my current desktop... which is a 4 year old 1.6ghz amd and 512mb ram and a gf4 4400

i won't be doing much gaming on the laptop aside from occasional simcity4, so if it could handle that as well as my desktop can, that'd be awesome.

i've been looking at a few websites and the best deals i've found so far are dell's home/home office using the coupons online. anyone own a dell laptop?

i was specifically looking at the 700m model because of its portability

5 lbs? That's a fucking cinder block. And you won't need more than 60GB for a MBA laptop - I have thousands of hourse of work on mine after a year and it's not even close to being full (and yes, I have like 20 GB of MP3 on it as well).

most of the laptops with the same specs as mine are 10-12 lbs

it's for the mba program AND web design...the latter needs most of the space with dreamweaver, photoshop, illustrator, fireworks, etc etc

Dell is having a Big Sale it may be over now but I got an Inspiron 6000 with 1.8ghz Centrino ATI X300 graphics, 80gb HD, CD Burner/DVD Player, 15.4 in WUXGA (that is a Wide Screen Ulta XGA, basically the best laptop screen out there right now) XP Pro (with backup disk) Creative Audigy 2 ZS 7.1 Surround Sound all for about 1350.00 they had some huge sale my laptop was stickered at 2400.00 before I put any coupons I found. Look at http://www.techbargains.com/ for coupons. Good luck.

having been in the web design and development industry for over 8 years, the ENTIRE collection of ALL of my work is only about 6gb including source psd's, pdf's and associaed documents. There is absolutely no fucking way you will ever use even 40gb of space for LEGAL, non gaming pursuits.

All the programs you mentioned and or need will use 1-2gb installed. Your MBA work might be a gig, being very generous.

well then i'm in good shape...i have a huge archive of LEGAL music and i usually keep a few of my dvds stored on my laptop for traveling purposes (i have 300 LEGAL ones...lol)...i guess i don't need to worry about getting bigger than a 60gb...

Noen you think i made a good choice with the t42p?

^ absolutely Thinkpad is hands down the best laptop for PCs. I won't touch upon Macs here..

I have a T41p with 1.4Ghz Centrino, 256MB RAM (upgradable to 2 Gigs), 40Gb HDD, 14" LCD that I love. Never gave me any problems. But after joining my company recently, they've made me carry with me the damned Dell latitude D600. It's performance, elegance and comfort (keyboard etc) doesn't even compare to IBM's. I am thinking of selling my Thinkpad, as I dont want a spare laptop. So if any of you (or your friends) is interested, let me know! Price will be negotiable.

just for the record, there are legal ways of using up 40 gb for non-game pursuits.
