whistler beta 1 was unusable
im wondering if its worth getting beta 1 now or waiting for beta2. 7/31/2005 1:35:13 PM |

prolly better off waiting.
At best, the UI for Beta 1 is unpolished and IE7 is a poor interpretation of what a browser needs to look like these days. 7/31/2005 1:48:22 PM |

beta builds have debug code in them that slows down overall peformance.
drivers haven't been released to optimize the full benefits of vista or longhorn.
you're gonna have to wait till it's released in 2006...8/1/2005 2:38:08 PM |

This wasn't related to debug code.
It was probably related to unsupported hardware on my computer.
All accounts from reviews on the internet have Beta 1 running almost as fast as XP.
Regardless, what I saw when I did load the new shell was a slightly improved windows environment and nothing worth upgrading for.
I'll reserve all judgement until Beta II. 8/1/2005 3:13:45 PM |

from what we know about the Beta now and what the plans for Vista will be, will it be even worth it to upgrade from XP to this? like goin from 98 to 2000 was, i think, a big improvement and just overall a big step. will the transition from XP to Vista be the same or no? 8/1/2005 3:16:50 PM |

Not so much.
WinFS is being back ported to XP along with IE7.
However, by SP2, I think Vista will be a very very competent OS. 8/1/2005 3:19:53 PM |

i like it a lot, and doesn't run so bad on my a64 w/ 6600gt
but isn't one of the requirements (for the final build) a dual-core cpu? 8/1/2005 6:49:35 PM |

this makes me laugh... fighting piracy... ha

To carry out the hack, users simply needed to insert the following line into Explorer's address bar before the WGA authentication check was carried out:
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')" |
