4 button
Quote : | "Mighty Mouse even sounds as good as it feels. The audio feedback built into Mighty Mouse provides an aural sensation that responds to your movements. A tiny speaker inside Mighty Mouse produces button-clicking and Scroll Ball-rolling sound effects." |
That is nice (kind of like the iPod scroll clicking), but i wonder what the tactile feedback is? It sounds like it is a hard shell and it's just a touch pad that acts as the buttons. That will be interesting to see how it works - if it is "touch" or "click" sensitive. I leave my fingers on the buttons on my normal mouse at all times, and click without lifting them off the button. It's nice to get some tactile feedback when the button flexs and pushes back. That seems like it would definately be missing in a solid shell mouse.

if you can argue that the scroll function is a "button" when you tap on it then ok - i'd say it's a 3 button mouse - definitely not a 2 8/2/2005 11:38:03 AM |

On the IBM touch-mice with the blue tops I always called them fuzzy mouse condoms. They were replaceable and I used to work in a business that would order lots of these machines and they would come with little bags of the tips.
From the angle in the photo it does kindof look like a nipple ... 8/2/2005 9:55:21 PM |

It's a standard click for the mouse. The description is really bad. Basically if you've used an Apple mouse recently, it's the same thing with some touch sensative tech built in. When you press down on the mouse and click it senses where your fingers are to determine the type of click. A click with your fingers on the left side of the mouse or covering both the left and right sides is registered as a left click. A click with your fingers on the right side of the mouse is registered as a right click. All of it is of course modifiable to your wants.
The scroll ball is an actual ball, I assume it's working something like a trackball though I don't know for certain. In all it's a suprisingly nice mouse, though I would need more time with it in real world use to say for sure if I like the second button being a mere change in touch but I do like the fact that since the same button is used for both right a left clicking, the same force is required for both buttons.
The only thing that takes some getting used to is squeezing the sides to access the other function. That's a bit awkward.8/2/2005 10:33:07 PM |
tl All American 8430 Posts user info edit post |
So if the sides are now buttons, how do you hold a click as you lift the mouse into the air?
edit: full hardware review at Ars: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/mightymouse.ars
Quote : | "Both OS X and Windows XP recognized it immediately and I was able to start using the mouse without having to install any software. Both operating systems also allowed me to immediately use the right-click and scrolling functions as well without installing the software, which was a nice bonus. On the Mac, I could horizontally scroll as well, but not on Windows. I could not use the squeezy buttons or the scroll ball button without installing the drivers from the CD on the Mac and Apple has not released drivers for Windows at all. Software installation was quick, but required a system restart after finishing." |
Click, right-click, and up-down scroll supported on both OSes out of the box. That's expected. Side scroll out of the box on Mac. That's nice. Scroll button and side buttons after installing drivers. Restart required? That's gay. No drivers for Windows? So all they have is the 3 basic functions? That's ultragay.
Quote : | "As it turns out, Apple blew the description of its "aural feedback" and "touch sensitivity" out of proportion and led most of us to believe that 1) there was some sort of speaker built into the mouse with synthetic mouse sounds coming out of it, and 2) the shell might be solid-state touch-sensitive like our beloved iPod wheels. That is absolutely not the case—I even stuck my ear up to the mouse while using it for several minutes to be sure (and received a few strange glances in the process).
Like the Apple Pro Mouse, the upper shell depresses when you press on it in various places with your finger(s), and the clicking noise is an actual, real clicking noise that is not any different from the clicking noise I'm getting right now with the Microsoft Intellimouse on my Windows XP box. Frankly, I was almost a little disappointed that I would not be able to make fun of these "features!"" |
Then what a terrible description on Apple's part. (Other than what b4k4 said above) I was led to believe that the mouse was solid-state and produced sounds similar to the iPod's scroll wheel. That would have been gay.
Quote : | "When you press both buttons at the same time or simply depress the top half of the mouse, it left clicks. I consider this to be a very important point, as much of the recent debate about this mouse has revolved around whether it would be a good mouse solution to package with new Mac products in the future, therefore having to still "just work" for those who desire the one-button simplicity and not confusing those people when they start seeing unexpected contextual menus popping up. I think it would be very difficult to accidentally right-click this mouse, as most one-button users simply click on the left side with their index fingers or click in the center, which would still yield a left click." |
Quote : | "The scroll ball is the best part, if I must say so myself. As a matter of fact, I absolutely love it. Like a very miniature trackball built into the top of the mouse shell, it is extremely smooth and can move in all directions. Unlike most scroll wheels, there is no obviously distinctive clicking in the movement of the scroll ball, but it still provides just enough user feedback to keep you from questioning whether it's moving." |
That seems kinda weird. Looks way too small to be an actual ball. I was thinking it would be an "eraser tip" like on some laptops.
Quote : | "Apple's product page for the Mighty Mouse brags that you can do 360-degree sweeps and scroll at a 45-degree angle, but my experience on three different machines says that's not quite the case. While trying to scroll at 45º in Photoshop, the diagonal scrolling leaves a bit to be desired. Horizontal and vertical scrolling is smooth as usual, and 360º sweeps seem to work alright as long as "360 degrees" means something more like "scrolling in a square-shaped pattern." You can control the speed of the scrolling (not independently, however) in the Mouse System Prefs." |
No independent scroll speed control? That's gay.

The quote from the Apple site in my first post has been officially replaced with
Quote : | "Mighty Mouse even sounds as good as it feels. The audio feedback built into Mighty Mouse provides an aural sensation that responds to your movements. When you scroll or click, Mighty Mouse produces subtle sound effects based on your actions." |
Looks like there was some miscommunication between the marketing, design and engineering departments.
And the Ars review clears up the confusion and takes much of the spin off of the Apple marketing. "tiny speaker" turned into "MM produces subtle sound effects" which are, in fact, the natural sounds plasic and metal makes when moving against each other. jeez - the Apple marketing BS has really gone full force on this one, trying to play up the fact that their new revolutionary mouse actually makes clicking sounds when you click it. Having said that..... I am still going to stop by the Apple store on the way home from work (hopefully they have the mouse already in the European stores?), but if I like it, will still hold off buying one till it is wireless.8/3/2005 7:15:40 AM |

No, the sound isn't natural for the scroll, the ball doesn't click in any real tactile manner for it to be generated that way. It's definately being generated artificialy, but its probably not a tiny speaker so much as a simple clicker. 8/3/2005 7:31:12 AM |

^ I agree, but to their credit, the small clicking sounds in the iPod makes a big difference, I think, in that it comes from the iPod itself, rather than through the headphones. It gives the touch-wheels a whole new feeling when you actually hear the clicking as you scroll. but for a mouse.....? i expect to hear and/or feel a click when i press the button - it shouln't be a marketing add-on 8/3/2005 9:19:27 AM |
