Alabama is definitly deep south, I went to Destin Beach, FL a week ago and I was trying my hardest to make sure my black ass didn't make in stops in Bama when I was driving. 8/7/2005 6:34:13 PM |

i think the panhandle can be safely considered the south. the peninsula is another story. 8/7/2005 6:54:43 PM |

I lived in the panhandle of FL for 8 months. Its considered LA, lower alabama, which is pure white trash, minus Mobile, which is actually a nice town. Mississippi is kinda bad with the white trash rednecks, but I really don't see that much of a difference between Deep south and down east NC. 8/7/2005 7:19:00 PM |

the panhandle is most definitely deep south. it's a different animal altogether than southern FL. i'm like 10 minutes from alabama.
^^yeah, i remembered after i posted, but i was too lazy to fix it.

Reid, if I don't get switched to pilot (should know in about a month), and I get F-18s as a WSO (basically a 50% chance), i'm gonna request to be stationed in Beaufort, SC.
(if i get switched to pilot, i'm still gonna shoot for either F-18s or Harriers, and try to get stationed in Beaufort, SC or Cherry Point, NC, respectively...but there are a lot more possible scenarios of what airplane i'd get and where i'd get stationed if i switch to pilot) 8/7/2005 9:39:00 PM |

i almost dropped my air contract when i found out that they were making me an NFO instead of a pilot, but then i found out that if i did that, they'd screw me HARD by not letting me compete for job selection. i'd prob end up in either supply or admin.
one thing about the Marines, though...as a pilot/NFO, you can do a 1 year tour as a forward air controller (FAC). you get attached to an infantry/tank/amphib/etc unit, and it's your job to coordinate close air support for them. 8/8/2005 11:29:21 AM |

Ummm....
I think some of you are confused about Florida.
The Banana Republic of Miami-Dade, Tampa/St. Pete, Orlando, Ft Lauderdale/Broward, West Palm/Boca Raton, are obviously not the South. They do cover a lot of land, but Florida is a big state.
But trust me. You make a run on US41 Tamiami Trail "Alligator Alley" from Miami to Naples, you are definately in the South. Anything inland in Florida is definately the South. Even if you were to go around Homestead, you may think you were in the South if you didn't know it was in the Miami-Dade county.
There are a lot more good ol boys in South Florida than you think. A lot of it is like the town Ray Finkle from "Ace Ventura" is from in Collier.

I think you have to include the northern part of florida (Panhandle through Gainesville & over to Daytona Beach) in the deep south. Really isn't much different than the rest of the deep south. 8/8/2005 3:03:46 PM |

^Back to the differences of the deep south and Down East, NC, I lived in Central Mississippi for 2 years. This place was 45 minutes where the actual Mississippi burning took place. I honestly was less scared in MS than I am now living in New Bern. 8/8/2005 5:35:29 PM |

This can be a very rewarding job in many respects. On the other hand, this is often times a very frustrating job. When you are the aviation guy for people who aren't aviators, this is often a recipe for a lot of trouble--make sure you read your books before you do a tour like that.8/9/2005 7:57:10 PM |

duke, don't know how much time away this weekend i will get. but i am here at the point until feb, then going to yuma.
FAC tours can be cool, but getting one with a motorized unit is the key. pilots don't like to walk too much. 8/9/2005 9:08:15 PM |

^^ok. if my leave request gets approved, i'll be there from friday until the 28th...figure i'd better burn some leave while i have the chance.
and yeah, humping everywhere is overrated. getting a unit that rides in style is key for a FAC! 8/9/2005 10:27:12 PM |

if you bought property down here the past couple years, you lucked out. One person i talked to bought his house last year for 60k, it is now worth double. The weird thing is the prices exploded after the hurricanes. One lady said she has about 9k worth of roof damage to her two story house,(good neighborhood, lake) and one day a real estate agent came to the door and offered her alot of money to sale, she didnt. 8/13/2005 10:21:48 PM |

Depends on how you look at it! Yes, some say that it has become it's own region and others still consider it the south. I still believe that they are the south. Prob. because when I move down there I still want to consider myself southern, since I was born and raised in NC! 8/14/2005 10:28:07 PM |

I rode into a little town called Tifton on the GA/FL border... they had a billboard that said "Tifton, GA Agriresearch city of the south." I said, "that's bullshit... there's no way they do more agricultural research here than we do at State... we have dozens of farms and laboratories!!!" He replied..."Son, I don't think these ppl think Raleigh is in the South." 8/14/2005 10:46:32 PM |
