I don't like MS because they get their hands on everything. They make everything proprietary. Browsing standards, office formats, etc. Open em up so I can choose the best program to run things rather than my only choice. 8/9/2005 3:00:15 PM |

I don't think the OpenOffice license says anything about the binaries

Yes. Our licenses, the LGPL and SISSL, allow anyone to sell and otherwise distribute OpenOffice.org binaries (executable installation sets; the application people can use), provided that the source is always made available to all, either by link (to http://www.openoffice.org/) or by inclusion. If you are interested in selling CDROMs of OpenOffice.org or distributing it via OEM computers, please visit the CDROM and OEM projects." |

Dude
Stop being a total retard...
You can install OpenOffice.org on multiple machines, cuz, due to the stupid nature of the GPL and the LGPL, you are effectively getting a new license for all the machines.
I don't think you use the same downloaded binary/source for all your machines.
That's right...you download them separately...and when you do so, you accept to abide by the PoS GPL. 8/9/2005 4:19:54 PM |

Huh? So you're saying that the LGPL does not allow me to download once, place that binary on a CD, and then proceed to install it on as many machines as I'd like?
Because that's an interesting and unique take on it.8/9/2005 4:21:27 PM |

If you copy just the binaries...without the source code
You're violating the GPL 8/9/2005 4:25:24 PM |

Not true.
Quote : | " If distribution of object code is made by offering access to copy from a designated place, then offering equivalent access to copy the source code from the same place satisfies the requirement to distribute the source code, even though third parties are not compelled to copy the source along with the object code. " |
What the LGPL requires is that you give everyone access to the source code if they so desire. Every user is not required to take it if they don't want it.
Thus, if I don't want to install the source on all of my machines, I don't. I can still install said binary on any of them without violating anything.

Which means that you have to make the source available when you give them a copy of the program. After that...it is their prerogative to use it or not. 8/9/2005 4:34:34 PM |

I don't see any definition of "licensee" in the LGPL, which means it's open to interpretation. However, the obvious take on that would be that "licensee" refers to the person, not to a single machine.8/9/2005 4:39:43 PM |
