I have a toshiba laptop which, as of late, seems to be overheating a lot. it just shuts off, no warning, no nothin, just shuts off. has anyone else had this problem and is there anything i can do to fix it, save getting a new hard drive? 8/10/2005 9:58:06 AM |

Overheating? Make sure the fan isn't blocked. Put another fan in it. Set it down on a towel draped over a block of ice. What in the world makes you think getting a new hard drive has anything to do with anything? 8/10/2005 10:02:00 AM |

frosh: i assumed it was the hard drive. i really don't know a whole lot about what caused the problem. the fan does get quite loud, and if i'm running a 3d modeling program like 3D studio max that really works the computer, it'll just shut down in the middle of a rendering. why do you think that happens? also, the computer is generally really hot when that happens, which leads me to think it's overheating
kev: yea its a satellite 8/10/2005 10:11:22 AM |

try using a can of compresed air on the fan. You may have a lot of dust clogging it up. It's worth a shot. Other things you can do are use a notebook cooler, or replace the fan. If you have a P4 3.2 GHz or faster in your laptop then you should probably do all of the above. 8/10/2005 10:11:35 AM |

Yeah, rendering is pretty processor-intensive, and processors in laptops put out a lot of heat that doesn't get dissipated nearly as well as it would in full-sized systems. If you have a spare bay (doubtful), add a new fan, and try to keep the areas around all fans and vents on the laptop clear. That might mean having to put the thing up on stilts if the fan vents through the bottom of the machine, but them's the breaks. 8/10/2005 10:17:57 AM |
