J. D. Power and Associates has released its 2005 report of the top ten most dependable vehicles and the ten least dependable. Below are their lists of 2002 model-year car brands, based on how many problems the original owners have reported over the past three years.

not trying to defend one company, but i know more about vws than kias.. it pretty much applies across the board and its hard to say from one model year (the 2005 report is from the 2002 model years). it would be better to take, say, a 5-year average or something.

GM cars have been basically the same (as far as major components) for many years leading up to '02. So as this survey goes I'm sure they did actually have far fewer problems. It is interesting, however, the disparity between Lexus and Toyota. This is probably because toyota has a more diverse product line and hence more room for error.

Lexus and Toyota don't share platforms for everything I would think. Like the LS430 is probably made better than the Corolla obviously. I'd like to see a list of which cars from these makes were least reliable though and how much one or two models affected the ranking of an entire car maker.

What the survey doesn't tell you is what exactly the people complained about.... using their stupid fucking scale, "burned out blinker fluid" ranks the same severity as "catastrophic engine kanooter-valve failure".

They need to break it down into categories (cosmetic, powertrain, suspension, chassis, etc...)

consumer reports has it in least dependable cause owners of new bmw's will take it back to the dealership for complaints like "the glove box makes a slight clicking sound if i open it at 54mph around a turn on this one street and the radio is on 91.5"

lexus? number 1? like hell. our gx 470 has been in the shop 3 times with break and wheel issues in the last 6 months, its under warranty and whatnot, but its still a pain in the ass to break down in the middle of nowhere.
