Money: Enough to answer that while in a clinical database development cycle I might work 60 hours a week but during lulls, I'll be there 40 but putting more effort into finding things to do than actually doing them. For example, the past two weeks have been pretty slack, but now I have to develop a new study for a new client on a new database software platform so I'm going to be pulling some all nighters and some work from home.

I enjoy perks such as working from home, multiple company laptops, travel and conferences. Pharmaceuticals is a fast paced and challenging area to be in.

The Contract Research part that I'm involved in is very incestuous. The same people make the rounds to about a half dozen companies around the triangle. We refer to the big Pharma's like GSK, Pfizer and Schwarz as "the promised land".

I'd just like to point out that just because you have a liberal arts degree doesn't mean you can't go out and get a well-paying job or have to be stuck in a government-paying teaching position.

Starting Salary: $36k + year bonus based on company profits + paid lunches + full benefits. No deductables

Current: IT/Webmaster for Audioadvice.com I do everything for the small company from writing small applications, rewriting their current website, IT issues at user and server levels, Phone systems, Barcode systems etc etc. I am the 1 man IT guy and have a 99% uptime with over 100 employees.

I took the job for experience and walked into a freaking nightmare where they had every single application for the store, form web services, to internal applications, to exchange email server, to the backend databases running on a p3 1ghz processor 1gb memory on a raid setup of 4 16gb drives, with a 4gb main partition and 2 other drives which split up the rest. It had 104 mb free space and crashed multiple times daily. They also had not had a successful backup in the past 6 months. The company (First Service) they hired to come in and do the minor IT they had did the bare minimum and never checked the servers as agreed.

Edit: Fixed it all, got rid of the dead weight (First Service), bought new servers, migrated everything to new servers, mvoed the DNS, created a seconday DNS, replaced their backup, fixed problems with the phone system, etc etc etc. Everything is running at mostly 99% downtime. There are still issues with current software that is vendor related that I cannot fix as we aren't allowed to touch it.

I really can't wait for this years bonus .

M.S./Ed.S. in Counseling and Educational Development

Just got hired as a substance abuse clinician with Daymark Recovery Services...I'll be doing group work plus individual counseling with substance-abusing adults and adolescents...should be about a 40/hr work week but I have the opportunity to do some emergency on-call stuff, which pays GREAT...supposedly if I only do one weekend a month there's another $3,000-4,000/yr.

Pay=good enough for me to be glad I decided to go to graduate school.

Generally work about 45 hours a week. Never less than 40 and the longest week ive had is maybe 65 hrs.

i majored in TED, so if i had a relative job i'd be making ~30-35k. i work in real estate though, have a base of 24k+ commission (1.25% of the sales price of each house). the huge plus is i work maybe 25-30 hours a week. 10-15 of that is sitting in my office playing on the computer. downside is i work alot of weekends, odd hours, and have to be on call pretty much 24/7.

That's probably well above the average for math majors, but goes to show that depending on what you do with it, you can still get a pretty nice job if you market your degree well.

It's also in Houston, but using that cost-of-living calculator linked earlier on the page, Houston is actually almost identical to Raleigh (said Houston was a teeny tiny bit cheaper). It seems accurate to me, based on my apartment and utilities costs compared to when I was in Raleigh.
