I always get my motor oil at Wal Mart. Shit's significantly cheaper (Castrol GTX) than some auto store.

actually the 3/4" mdf that i used in my current is flexing, it's evident by my screws slowly working their way back out. so i may not need 1" mdf but obviously mt 3/4" isn't enough.

15" orion h2 w/ 1200w+ rms in a 3 cube box , yea i'm just gonna resin the insides of the box should seal it up + make the box stronger. so is walmart the cheapest place to get small amounts of resin?

a gallon is cheaper by volume. you'll probably need more resin than you think. you'll go through a quart in no time, especially on a 3cuft box.

does your box have any bracing?

yea i have minimal bracing in each of the corners of the box. i was going to just add bracing but that would throw off my internal volume and i'd still have to go back and seal the box.i figured glassin the box would just do both w/o changing the net volume. so how muahc am i looking at for 1/2 gallon?? and where should i get it?

yeah it is. i think Mobil 1 is at least $1/quart cheaper at Wal-Mart than it is at advance or zone.

It is probably enough to run two 2" wide braces on each side of the driver from the baffle back to the back of the box and probably two more of the same from top to bottom. If you are driving that much power through a sub, then changing the volume in the box due to braces, and the resulting impact to the sound quality, are non issues. It could be just as easy to get another 3/4" sheet and make the baffle 1.5" and be done with it.

a gallon of resin is $20 or $25

you're worried about changing the volume of the box using bracing, but to make any kind of structurally sound change with fiberglass you're gonna need a half inch of thickness. that's a lot of cloth and a lot of resin, not to mention it doesn't help if you don't do it well and get all the air out.

so which will change the volume more? 1/2" less on every dimension or a 3/4" brace running along each wall?

if it's that big of a problem and you want to do it right, rebuild the box and include the bracing in the volume

1/2" all the way around. that is a bit extreme? He isn't building a brand new box.

i lost the howto pics of my home theatre sub, but a great way to brace a box well is to like.. hrmm ok if you have say a rectangular cube.. picture both small ends off so your looking through it. build a cross shapped 'wall' inside so that the rectangle is now divided into 4 skinnier rectangles. but before you glue the walls in, fill them w/ holes. like 3-4" holes. be sure to cut out for where the sub baskets will be. works good and is strong. bracing is key.

a single or double layer of fiberglass, even backed by the mdf, is not going to make the box any stronger. fiberglass is stronger for a given weight compared to wood, but fiberglass doesn't get it's strength till you build up some thickness.

maybe not a half inch, but he's going to need more cloth and resin than just a quart or a gallon to make a difference i think. bracing would be much more effective, cost effective, and easier to do.

like ^ said, cut out another piece the size of one of the sides of the box, drill it full of holes, but still leave enough wood there to make it solid, then put it in the middle of the box.

with the holes cut out, and given the size that this box is already, the little bit of volume you are going to be taking up will be negligable, like was said before.

the combination of the fact that mdf is a tiny bit pourous, and i'm not bob villa i figure the glass would effectivly get rid all of the tiny leaks and completely seal up the mdf. i know mdf is stronger than fiberglass in a flat sheet but id din't know id' need 1/2" of it . i figured i could coat the box w. ab 2-3 layers of resin to seal AND strethen the box. so i guess i could just glass over the inside of the box a single time then add some braces.

i think maybe i just need to do braces , didn't realize i need hardner+ cloth in addtion to just the resin.

resin by itself is very brittle...it'll just crack without cloth
hardner comes with the resin usually.

silicone the seams, add braces, call it a day. fiberglass is too much trouble just to seal a box. we had this conversation several months ago. i think it was maximadrvr that wanted to seal with fiberglass?

You did use glue in the first place right? I don't get how you intend to add the bracing after the fact.

dado grooves, thats where the strength is at, use a table saw, build one right with biscuits and glue in tight fitting dado joints and you dont even need screws, also dont use the cheap ass hardware store wood glue, use the two part epoxy resin

According to three-time soap box derby champ Ronnie Beck, poorly guarded construction sites are a gold mine.

you know that a whole sheet costs just under $20 at lowes right? if your sheet is anything less than brand new, then that price will never sell.
