Okay, so my wife's cell phone is broken and we need another one, but our contract doesn't end until next summer. Can I get a phone for her and get a new service contract (and thereby reducing the price of the phone), or do I have to dish out the full price for the phone?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

probably full price

i see these 2 situations as your best bet

a)

1.buy insurance on the phone
2.tell place that you lost phone a few days after insurance(atleast wait 2 days)
3.get new phone from insurance

b)

1.go to tww classifieds and get a cheap phone(rock bottom prices on tww cant be beat) that works with your current plan
2.go to your phone place and have them activate it

they usually don't let you get insurance on a phone if you've had it more than 30 days

who is your carrier?

insurance takes a month or so to activate.

or so the booklet says.

cingular lets you get insurance on a phone you didn't get from them as long as it's on their approved list.

if you are verizon, you can cancel your contract right now without paying the early termination fee because verizon is going to start charging an "Administrative Fee" of 40 cents a month. this is a change in the terms of the 2 year agreement you signed and as such (read your contract), you have the right to cancel with no early termination fee.

I called Cingular and they said that if I wait a month (when I've had my current contract for a year), I can get an exemption to the 2-year contract price and get a 2-year contract for the price of a one year contract. A new phone will cost me $50-$70 more than the 2-year discounted price, so I think that's what we are going to do.
