I'm using Thunderbird as my email client and can't get it to send a damn thing via the ncsu SMTP servers when i am connected to resnet. I can send fine on the NCSU wireless. Here is the message i get:

Furthermore, I get this message right away, as opposed to it being delayed if i try and use smtp.ncsu.edu (which shouldn't work anyway from resnet...)
It doesn't seem to be a firewall issue as I have tried disabling the XP firewall and still can't get it to send, in addition to plugging resnet into the computer directly and disabling the XP firewall. I can ping smtp-resnet.ncsu.edu just fine, so i don't think its that. I followed the resnet setup page and am still at this juncture.
And yes, I do have the security set to TSL (or whatever the resnet page says to use) and I have the user account set and checked.

ResNet was given it's own outgoing e-mail server a couple of years ago in an attempt to help deal with some outgoing spam mail problems.
If you're getting this message consistently, and you've verified that the settings are correct, I'd suggest calling 515-HELP, or e-mailing resnet@ncsu.edu. If it is a server problem, better that they be made aware of it sooner rather than later. Also, if it's not a server problem, maybe they can help correct the issue, and then update their online documentation.

Not sure if this is your problem (since if it was, it shouldn't work anywhere).
If you have the email scanning part of Symantec 9 turned on you can't use authenticated SMTP.

if you are in a dorm make sure you are using smtp-resnet.ncsu.edu as your outgoing smtp server instead of smtp.ncsu.edu. for more information check out http://www.ncsu.edu/resnet/email/ and note the link in there that says necessary server information. 8/21/2005 4:00:08 PM |
