Jesus Christ.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050824/ap_on_fe_st/obesity_complaint

Quote :
"ROCHESTER, N.H. - As doctors warn more patients that they should lose weight, the advice has backfired on one doctor with a woman filing a complaint with the state saying he was hurtful, not helpful.

Dr. Terry Bennett says he tells obese patients their weight is bad for their health and their love lives, but the lecture drove one patient to complain to the state.

"I told a fat woman she was obese," Bennett says. "I tried to get her attention. I told her, 'You need to get on a program, join a group of like-minded people and peel off the weight that is going to kill you.' " (hahahahaha, GG Dr. Bennett!)

He says he wrote a letter of apology to the woman when he found out she was offended.

Her complaint, filed about a year ago, was initially investigated by a board subcommittee, which recommended that Bennett be sent a confidential letter of concern. The board rejected the suggestion in December and asked the attorney general's office to investigate.

Bennett rejected that office's proposal that he attend a medical education course and acknowledge that he made a mistake.

Bruce Friedman, chairman of the board of medicine, said he could not discuss specific complaints. Assistant Attorney General Catherine Bernhard, who conducted the investigation, also would not comment, citing state law that complaints are confidential until the board takes disciplinary action.

The board's Web site says disciplinary sanctions may range from a reprimand to the revocation of all rights to practice in the state.

"Physicians have to be professional with patients and remember everyone is an individual. You should not be inflammatory or degrading to anyone," said board member Kevin Costin.

Other overweight patients have come to Bennett's defense.

"What really makes me angry is he told the truth," Mindy Haney told WMUR-TV on Tuesday. "How can you punish somebody for that?"

Haney said Bennett has helped her lose more than 150 pounds, but acknowledged that the initially didn't want to listen.

"I have been in this lady's shoes. I've been angry and left his practice. I mean, in-my-car-taking-off angry," Haney said. "But once you think about it, you're angry at yourself, not Doctor Bennett. He's the messenger. He's telling you what you already know.""

"Look, woman, besides your mullet and rarely washed Jeff Gordon shirt and your sweats where the elastic is being held together by a singe strand, you're fat, you're white trash, and you should do something about that. I know medicaid is paying for your visit today, and I'm sure that, since you're not paying for the visit, you can afford Jenny Craig."

Doc shoulda said that.

Man, you guys are harsh. Someone needs to defend this fatty!

My step mom is pretty fat. Okay, she's definitely in the obese category, but she's also pretty active with hiking and skiing and playing tennis.

She has noted to me that some doctors seem to think that every illness she has is related to her being fat. She goes in with the flu and gets told she's too fat. She goes in with a broken wrist and is told she needs to lose weight. She has an eye infection and he comments that she needs to exercise more (which is funny because, even though she's fat, she probably exercises more than the doc.) You get the idea.

So, after listening to my step mom tell it, I'm not surprised this fat lady was offended by the doc. She was probably in there getting allergy shots or something and didn't appreciate the guy commenting on her weight.

women, esp. chubby ones, are very sensitive about their weight. In no way do I think this Dr. should get in trouble, but if this was his first encounter with this woman, then he should realize he should have been nicer (which, if he wrote an apology letter, he does). If this was a regular patient though, and she wasn't improving, more stern warning is acceptable.

he's a doctor.

he isn't supposed to be her friend. he's supposed to provide health care and advice for her, which he did. no reason to be abrasive about it, but no reason to sugarcoat anything, either.

a lot of diagnosis is systematic guessing. i mean, my mom diagnosed herself with something long before her doctor figured it out onetime, just by reading up (though im sure there was some chance involved too).

so, in short, they know plenty about treatment, but diagnosis is hit or miss.

^^ damn right.

I hate this bullshit of having to candy coat everything. This is probably why I'd make a horrible doctor. I'm an intolerant motherfucker.

If it had been me, my diagnosis would be:

I think you are fat. We have two possible solutions to this dilemma, netiher of which is pretty. But together, I think we can work through this. Option one involves getting your mouth sewn shut, unfortunately you will not be able to suck cock using this remedy, and therefore your use to the male population of the planet will be at an end (since no one wants to touch your overweight festering vagina). Option two involves the "Dr. Bobby" diet plan. This involves nothing but a steady diet of sperm, courtesy of various local frats. If you select option two, call this number for futher instructions, and wear a shirt that covers your gut.

the kill yourself solution goes against that "do no harm" thing.

" Dr. Terry Bennett, a Harvard-educated family practitioner in Rochester, N.H., told her she was obese and her weight was contributing to her diabetes and other health problems.

Bennett also told the 5-foot-7, 250-pound woman that she was statistically likely to outlive her also-obese husband and that she would have a hard time finding a new man as a fat woman. "I talked to an obese patient, told her the truth, she was offended," Bennett told NBC's "Today" show yesterday."

the sad part about this article is that its in NH
i can't believe a state board in new hampshire would be this politically correct
you know they're all snickerin' behind her back

ps
Quote :

you know
i'm a fattie
and i probably more work out more than the average thin american
but unless i can actually burn the calories to take the weight off
i'm still going to die before the average thin american, even if they never do any exercise

its not like playing tennis 3 times a week is going to make up for the high cholestorol, heart strain and insulin resistance that comes with being fat

i used to think that whole "i work out more than thin people" thing mattered
but it really really doesn't

btw, my doctor told me essentially the same thing in december 2003 that this woman's doctor hold her
but the difference is, instead of getting pissed
i got committed and lost 40 pounds in three months
