Ok so I have a fairly old comp, p3 866mhz, 512 ram. Problem is once I boot up the comp, nothing shows up on the screen. I can hear the hard drive spinning for the first few secs then stop. The fans in the ps and back are spinning. So what reasons are there for causing a blank screen? Also I've tried a different video card and tried reseating the ram but nothing. No lights on my keyboard also.

Does the PC have onboard video at all?

If it does (you may have to uncap the D-Sub connector), then open it up and a take out any cards and try to boot it with just the HDD and the video connected directly to the motherboard.

Do you have th option to select a digital or analog video input on the monitor? Is there an 'A' and a 'B' vga input on the monitor? The monitor might be looking for the wrong type of input/input from the wrong slot. I've seen that happen before.

Try removing any cards or hardware from the computer that you can and see how it responds with any attempts to boot it.

Even without video, see if the HDD sounds like it is being accessed, see if you can hear any beeps, etc ...

if its not doing any sort of beeps and never showing shit on the monitor then something is fairly fucked. i had this happen one time when something on the motherboard was shorted out from a mount that was in a weird place and i had to rip off. i'd start by unhooking as much shit as you can and see if you can get any kind of response. in my example i ended up having literally the entire computer (aka motherboard/power supply/video card basically) sitting on pieces of paper on the floor and found that it worked fine there...

are the num/cap/scroll lock lights coming on and going back off when you turn it on??

I can hook the monitor up to another comp and it works fine. Num/cap/scroll lights are not coming on either. I might have to just start removing parts from it till I get some kind of response.
