I've got about 50 CDRs of archived data that I'm consolidating onto an external HD. Any recommendations on destroying them beyond breaking them apart by hand? 8/26/2005 1:50:48 PM |

Give'em to homeless people for warmth. They can put'em in a trashcan and lite them on fire. Very healthy 8/26/2005 1:52:10 PM |

I did this to about 20 CDs at a time, and it was pretty cool. I couldn't imagine doing 50.
Instead of breaking them, just take a knife and put a couple of big scratches in them.8/26/2005 2:15:21 PM |

I agree with the microwave thing. But don't put them in there for a second longer or it will start to stink. If you don't know what happens when you microwave a CD, a visible "wave of electricity" passes over the surface (make sure that you put the data side of the CD facing up). 8/26/2005 2:18:56 PM |

It's getting a little cumbersome. I'm planning on putting them on the external HD and either mirroring it to another HD or making 1 set of DVD copies to get rotated every few months8/26/2005 2:40:21 PM |

Lie them in a row on the train track that runs through campus
Place on a gravel surface and run them over with a car
Tie them together and shoot a whole through them all with a high caliber pistol or rifle
Come on man, be creative. If you come up with some crazy way to get rid of them, make sure to video tape it. 8/26/2005 5:13:35 PM |

Heat them up slowly and evenly and see if you can melt them into a ball of plastic goo and shape them into something cool. 8/26/2005 6:22:14 PM |

C'mon, this is too easy. Get 2 spindles. Fill each only halfway with CD's. Turn the spindle upside down and drill a pourable-sized hole anywhere in the bottom part. (Using a Dremel works best.) Fill each spindle with gasoline. Light the spindle. You can even dance around it if there's stuff on the CD's which you really despise.
OR, if you really want to be thorough, apply sticky CD labels to each CD. Marinade the labeled CD's in the gasoline for about an hour. Light and dance. 8/26/2005 8:03:18 PM |
