interesting.... guess they're cranking up the switch campaign again.

my opinion? just buy one. $500 (or $600-650 better configured).... just do it. If you don't like it, resell it for 400. I got one before they upgraded the line. I'm happy - would be happier with the faster CPU and a little more RAM, but overall works fine.

^ yeah, if i got one that's what I'd use it for. You're talking like $700 for the full system including a touch screen and controls. mmmmm.

isn't this the same as what any other company does, you get 30 days to send it back?

it's just that "test drive" sounds more low risk and non-committal than "you have 30 days for a refund"

" Apple Mac mini promotion dead after one day

8/31/2005 9:56:21 PM, by Ken "Caesar" Fisher

If you blinked, you missed it. Yesterday Apple surprised us when they announced a 30-day, money-back guarantee on the Mac mini and select accessories to the general public through its online store. Although the company has offered enticement deals before, particularly in the educational market, it's not a common marketing strategy for the company. Maybe it should stay that way.

Without a single word of explanation, the deal is gone. Kaput. Although the promotional page yesterday said that the offer would be available until October 31 of this year, it doesn't appear to have lasted even 24 hours. Calls to Apple's PR types have not been returned, but one gentleman at Apple's telephone sales center told me that the deal was "pulled" and they they would not comment on such matters. A sales associate at the Apple Store in Cambridge was even surprised to hear that the deal was off.

Such an about-face is amateurish and risks drawing the ire of the very people they were looking to entice. A quick hop around the news sites shows that plenty of media outlets only reported on the new promotion in the last few hours, meaning that many people will only learn about it after its demise. If Apple was out for a buzzkill, I guess you could call this a success.

It's difficult to imagine how Apple bungled this one. The Apple optimist might imagine that the company had miraculously sold through their inventory, but that seems highly unlikely. First, a raging success wouldn't exactly be cause to kill the deal and stay mum on the subject. Second, Apple has never shied away from selling items with modestly long waitlists, so unless they sold more than can be delivered between now and October 31, there's got to be an explanation. Let the speculation begin!"

Not really...you can only RMA a Mac for defects and it has to within 14 days and you pay 10% of the cost as restocking fee.
