I just want something moderately priced and that i could plug in my Xbox/PS2 and my PC and not lose any transfer speed on either

seems like a good choice, you didn't mention if you wanted wireless or not but this does have it (although on antenna, it is internal... aparently that works ok, and you can always add an antenna later)

cost around $40, average price. it's tiny too.

Yeah I got one of those routers last weekend, works great. Best Buy had it for $40 as well if you don't want to order it online, granted that was last week so I don't guarantee they still have it that price.

any particular brand you guys like better than others? which do you avoid, and why? do some brands have more robust firewalls, or better configuration options, or more overall reliability?
i've always liked linksys, for the price and ease of use. not sure how their firewalls stack up...

its hard to go wrong with any brand wired router, especially if features like vpn pass through, port forwarding, and firewall quality are worth very little to the end user

^^ last year i got a wireless router and while we were setting it up, the router randomly lost power and wouldn't come back on
[i got a microsoft one and didn't have any problems]

2 weeks ago i had to buy a new wireless card for my laptop, so I got a D-link, which wouldn't install with the CD in the box, then I called D-link tech support & he told me to download the driver with the same # as the # on the hardware, which also didnt work (and i had just 3 days prior reformatted my hard drive so I don't think I was having issues on my side)
[i got a netgear one the same day and didn't have any issues]

and my roommate had a problem with something he bought from D-link, i don't know what

so I just steer clear and tell anyone else that its not worth it to bother with D-link

I have a Netgear WGR614. Works wonderful, Have my PC and PS2 Hardwired, wireless laptop. Only time I notice a drop in speed is when I'm in my bedroom (router is through 3 walls) - it's still "excellent" and never drops below 48Mbps in the worst of times.

just got a linksys wrt54gs wireless router for $50 i believe.

the one without speedbooster is like $10 cheaper (wrt54g).

untill you start transferring large amounts of data, it'll keep up quite nicely.

I'd second the WRT54GS. 2x the RAM of the WRT54G (and 2x the flash space). If you want to get down and dirty, you can overclock them a little to keep them from having trouble with high load situations too - this probably wouldn't be something the average user wants to do though.
