MY laptop's display will randomly turn off, and the computer will essentially go to standby.....The only thing is, when i press down sort of hard on the plastic piece directly over the fan, the display comes back, but the wallpaper is ruptured, along with many of the desktop icons. I can reset the wallpaper to look normal, and everything else works as normal....except for the icons that still look distorted and un-recognizable. Any suggestions as to what hardware could be causing this?

make sure you call 1800 IBM SERV first though, if you take it down there with a case number, they can send it off and provide a loaner. otherwise they can really only look at it, say "yeah, it's broke" and say bye.

also, if you bought the computer through ncsu and you have a warranty, you can get it fixed locally by an ibm certified partner, which means that you dont have to ship it anywhere. I am pretty sure that Computer Service Partners (near carter-finley), and alphanumeric (out off capital blvd), are the two main local places that can provide full service to ibm laptops. They can check your warranty status and IBM will re-imburse them for any work that they do to fix your problem. But, first call IBMserv. When you call, they probably won't mention that you can have it fixed locally, you have to ask them about it.

if you decide to have it done by one of these local places, ask each one about the expected turnaround time. Computer service partners is usually really busy so alphanumeric may be faster.

since he was describing graphical glitches, probably not.

a malfunctioning fan would most likely cause the system to emergency power-off, and not just appear to go into some kind of standby. there would also be a loud error noise as it did it.

it's possible that a fan on something like the gpu (if it even has a fan) could cause problems like that though, but it's still most likely a loose lcd cable.
