i'm not really sure what constitutes "indie" now-a-days, but you cant really go wrong with anything by the elephant 6 label..... neutral milk hotel, the olivia tremor control, the circulatory system, of montreal, gorky's zygotic mynci... pretty much all the big indie bands have been named, but there's so much more good music out there that isnt neccessarily indie. Check out the Super Furry Animals, Cornelius, Doves, The Helio Sequence, Wilco, Rilo Kiley, The Smiths, Grandaddy, and The Decemberists... those are some of my favorites. Good luck on the music hunt and please take a flamethrower to that coldplay album you just bought.

Oh, I just bought:

Band of Bees - Sunshine hit me (much better than their new one)
Sea Ray - Stars at noon
Shout Out Louds - Howl Howl Gaff Gaff
Youth Group - SKeleton Jar
South San Gabriel - The Carlton Chronicles

Check out any/all of the above if you're still looking... especially the bees and the carlton chronicles. most people that hear those two albums have a real emotional attachment to them afterwards

MCR is NOT indie.

Their older stuff was good.

jawbreaker
mazzy star

sonic youth
sunny day real estate

texas is the reason

some of those bands don't exist anymore, and some signed to major labels.

When I think "the quintessential indie band" I think Dinosaur Jr., Archers of Loaf, Superchunk, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, bands like that.

Have The Magnetic Fields been mentioned? I want to marry Stephin Merritt.
