He's not a member of parliament. He's the head of one of the largest "Russian" provinces in Ukraine. Seems like the pendulum will now swing the other way.

Looks like the parliamentary elections in March are shaping up to be pretty exciting. Hopefully I'll be there for the election but I can't imagine that it will be more exciting than during the 'Orange Revolution'

Protest leader kidnapped for 8 days found alive today

Face slashed
Part of ear cut off
Nails driven into hands

http://mashable.com/2014/01/31/ukraine-dmytro-bulatov-mutilated

Quote :
"Speaking to Ukraine’s Channel 5, in the same blood-soaked clothes he was found wearing after he turned up in the village of Vyshinsky outside Kiev, he explained in excruciating detail that his captors kept him in a dark shelter for eight days and brutally beat and tortured him, mutilating his ear and driving nails through his hands.

“They crucified me,” he said, pointing to marks on the backs of his hands where the nails were driven through. “They cut off my ear, slashed my face. There's not a single alive spot on my body. But I am alive, thank God.”"

I didnt know things like that were happening, and he is not the only one who has been kidnapped and/or tortured. Click link to read about others, as well to see pics/video of Bulatov.

Well seeing how one of the Thai protest leaders got popped recently I would say this protest is on the tame side OEPI.

I just hope Obama sticks to his word in his state of the union speech and keeps the US far and away from all this bullshit.

There's a list of streams on reddit and one of them, euromaden I think, pretty much displayed everything thats in this thread a couple nights ago right before my eyes.

It's so close to Russia's sphere of influence I don't think we'd have a chance in swaying outcomes over there.

What are we gonna do, sanctions? Harsh words? Another line in the sand?

But the other half of the country supports the Russians.

I think really, the only thing left is to see what the Army decides to do. That will spell out what direction this all goes (pro-government, pro-protestors, neutral or splinter).

First round. With the Russian Army mobilizing and chunks of Ukraine like Sevastopol where pro-Russian groups have toppled the Ukrainian central government officials, installed their own leaders and are calling for secession however, this crisis is hardly over.

If anything, I think there's still a good chance that the country could fragment and civil war erupt between pro-Western and pro-Russian forces.

Things are going from bad to worse in the Ukraine. Unknown armed men are seizing airports and government facilities in the Crimea; some of my buddies who are experts on this stuff say that the equipment, training and tactics mark them as professionals.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian interim government is invoking the Budapest Memorandum, a treaty we and the Russians signed back in 1994 to secure the denuclearization of Ukraine. In exchange for giving up its nuclear arsenal, the United States, UK and Russia agreed to ensure the independence and territorial integrity of the Ukraine.

Memorandum language:

Quote :
"The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,

Welcoming the accession of Ukraine to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons as a non-nuclear-weapon State,

Taking into account the commitment of Ukraine to eliminate all nuclear weapons from its territory within a specified period of time,

Noting the changes in the world-wide security situation, including the end of the Cold War, which have brought about conditions for deep reductions in nuclear forces.

Confirm the following:

The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the CSCE Final Act, to respect the Independence and Sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine.

The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirm their obligation to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine, and that none of their weapons will ever be used against Ukraine except in self-defense or otherwise in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.

The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the CSCE Final Act, to refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by Ukraine of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind.

The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirm their commitment to seek immediate United Nations Security Council action to provide assistance to Ukraine, as a non-nuclear-weapon State Party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, if Ukraine should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used.

The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirm, in the case of the Ukraine, their commitment not to use nuclear weapons against any non-nuclear-weapon State Party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, except in the case of an attack on themselves, their territories or dependent territories, their armed forces, or their allies, by such a state in association or alliance with a nuclear weapon state.

The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will consult in the event a situation arises which raises a question concerning these commitments.

This Memorandum will become applicable upon signature.

Signed in four copies having equal validity in the English, Russian and Ukrainian languages."

Wednesday: Russia starts moving troops near Ukraine

Thursday: Nato defense ministers meet to discuss the issue

Look at some of these quotes

Quote :
" “Today I affirmed America’s strong support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and NATO defense ministers made the same declaration in a joint statement,” Hagel said.

The ministers expect other nations to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and avoid provocative actions, he added.

“That’s why I’m closely watching Russia’s military exercises along the Ukrainian border, which they announced yesterday,” Hagel said. “I expect Russia to be transparent about these activities, and I urge them not to take any steps that could be misinterpreted, or lead to miscalculation during a … time with great tension.”

The secretary said it’s important for all nations with an interest in a peaceful future for Ukraine to work together transparently to support a Ukrainian government that fulfills the aspirations of its people.

“Our session today also focused on Ukraine’s opportunities for defense reform and our ongoing military-to-military cooperation –- including Ukraine’s participation in NATO operations. And we welcomed the Ukra"

Then Obama came on and gave a verbal warning about invading Ukraine

Friday: Ukraine is invaded

Saturday: Russian parliament unanimously authorizes putin to invade ukraine and raise the nations collective middle finger at obama.

Obama is not respected. It really is that simple.

It's been a few short months since Obama backed down from his "red line". This confirmed to Putin that the United States would not challenge his power in any real way.

We have no collateral, our Middle East policy has destroyed our position for any other crisis. We don't have anything to bargain with or threaten, and Russia knows that.

Why exactly do we care if Russia goes into the Ukraine? That's their neighborhood. I'm assuming there's a treaty or agreement to protect Ukraine...?

If there's instability in a border country, I'd expect Russia to want to step in.

Russia needs Crimea under its thumb because it needs access to a warm water port in the Black Sea.

The US cares about this whole situation for the same reason we always care; we want to undermine and contain Russia in order to maintain a US / Western dominated Europe.
