I'm confused and need help on learning about "terminology" used in the music industry in all genres. How are the roles divided and what are their responsibilities? For instance, key words that come to mind are - live musican, studio musician, producer, arranger, composer, artist, sampler, dj, beat-maker, technician, mixer, etc.
Again, this topic applies to all genres. Fill any person's name you want to (Madonna, Norah Jones, Kanye West, Carlos Santana, Usher, Elvis)...sorry I'm just trying to think of names that people would recognize, not any particular favorites but more focused on people who appear to be "solo" and not in a band of any kind.
"X" has put out a brand new album. "X" has won a Grammy for their latest song. Are awards like the Grammy's based solely on final product and not process? How much of the album has "X" actually written themself? Does the person who actually writes the music get any credit at all, or is it just a payment if any?
And the fun part - what are your personal opinons on it all? Do you prefer live musicians to heavily computer-aided musicians?
Not trying to start any fights, it's all entertainment.
