Watching it on cspan right now. I was surprised by Kennedy's introduction (a romantic summary of american political rhetoric). It was moving. I think by the end Roberts looked like he was going to shed a tear.

This guy just acted like he was breaking down when talking about the "finger pointing" in America today. What a douchebag.

I listened to a few of the opening statements on NPR. I have to say I was impressed with most of the remarks from the congressmen/woman on the confirmation committee. I hope they actually practice what they preach during confirmation. Granted Roberts is pretty much a shoe-in at this point, but it would be good to see the committee members actually ask questions relevant to his legal experience and not turn it into a partisian side-choosing arguement.

I thought the opening remarks were pretty good on both sides, Dem and Republican, and Roberts himself made some very good opening remarks. There were two senators I heard who were just pandering, but 2/18 isn't that bad.

Yes he is, but Roberts seems to be doing a decent job parrying him. Still, Ted isn't going to let Roberts go anytime soon; with Katrina, he's been emboldened to take on the administration, and what better place to start than with his Supreme Court nomination.

^^yeah he is. condescending, browbeating dickhead, just like always.

i was impressed with Roberts from what i heard. i also found new respect for Orrin Hatch (still disagree with a lot of his policies, but liked his questioning a lot)

lesson 1
become a judge so you cant comment on current cases

lesson 2
if the first people you work for are promoting something, and you are doing your job and helping them, it doesn't mean that you personally are supporting that something

I thought he was justified in not answering most of the questions.

From what I understand he was a lot more open than most nominees have been in the past.

I thought it was interesting when John Roberts reminded the senate that John Adams had in fact defended the british soldiers in boston who were charged with the boston massacre.

^^ That is awesome! I need to watch this thing, is c-span the only place to get it?
Does anyone have a downloaded copy, c-span or otherwise, because I hate streaming media.
I always end up using StreamDown to download it before watching.

So far, he seems damn cool to me.

This, coming from a historic liberal swung libertarian.

I wouldn't say he's "cool".

I would say he's a pretty damn qualified jurist who I will probably hate once he's in power.

But he knows his stuff (as, obviously, should be the case).

I guess it wouldn't have flowed as well had I inserted "even for a politician".

He came out of committee 13-5, with all republicans and 3 democrats supporting. Honestly, I thought it might have been unanimous--reluctantly--in favor.
